I have done many mobile CPU upgrades. I have not done a swap to any UM or LM CPU's. If the 660LM is the same socket BGA1288. I plan on doing the CPU heatsink heatmod as seen here.

What I am wondering is if I should even bother wasting my time and possibly money if these CPU's are all embedded. I have a feeling that they aren't, but I'd rather ask all the awesome M11x fans here before I break down my entire CPU just to be disappointed.

So, anyone ever done a CPU upgrade?

They are all soldered to the motherboard as far as I know. I only have an R1 and I can say that it certainly is.

Since the cpu is soldiered on, it is nearly impossible to swap the cpu unless you have the proper equipment to do it. Even if you did, the 660 has a higher tdp than the i5, so the stock cooling might not be enough to keep it cool. There is also most likely no bios support for the 660 in the M11x.

So it's pretty much impossible to upgrade the cpu on the M11x. No one has reported doing so or even trying, it is just too much of a hassle.

i got to agree with I Has M11x, i just took mine apart and put it back togeather last nite (for fun) and the cpu is definetly sodered in. I guess technically you could make it work, the heatsink mod would definetly handle the extra heat and if you have the right equipment you could unsodder it and resodder a new one in but you are looking at a LOT of work just to play videogames dude. besides, if you could do that then alienware wouldnt have released the r2, which the same thing as the r1 but with a new cpu.
