This has started recently but whenever I play a game regaurdless of what the game is the laptop will randomly shut down. I was using Throttle Stop and thought that may be the problem but when i turned it off it still happened.

I havent changed anything major or installed anything that could be problematic.

    Any help?

    Need more information.

Are you overclocking? If so, does this happen when you return the BLK setting back to 133 in the BIOS?

    Are you overclocking your GPU?

What are your CPU and GPU temps like? Log them and see if you can determine if this is a heat issue.

Generally speaking, a shutdown with no BSOD/message usually means a serious hardware failure, or like everyone has said, the overheating mechanism is triggering to prevent your laptop from overheating.

I would recommend calling Dell and invoking your warranty.

If it's going through it's normal shutdown routine, and shutting down "cleanly" then you may have something less serious going on. To be honest, I've never heard of this happening. Definitely call Dell.

I also had this, and noticed that it only happened when my alienware was sitting at an angle, like on a laptop stand. laying flat fixed it. weird.

my guess would also be overheating, if there's just a shutdown with no warning or error. when you say it doesn't seem to be any hotter than usual, what does that mean? are you going by how hot the palm rest is? that isn't terribly scientific. if you're using a program that monitors, then that's another story, but it doesn't sound like you are.

I'd extend the warranty, that's just me though.

    Good luck.

I also started having shut downs within the last month. In the middle of gaming my m11x r2 will just power itself off. When this happens the bottom does seem to be screaming hot, so I assume it is overheating. I don't know what's happened to it recently though.

My warranty is up soon to - what should I say when I call?

fyi: It has shut down while playing Heroes of Newerth, Minecraft, and now Rift today.

Tell them its shutting down due to over heating.

I would personally extend the warranty. Gonna cost a bit though.

I think it cost me around 550 for extra 4 yrs, minus 70 dollar gift card.

yep, call them up and just tell them it's overheating...they'll make you run through some tests and then probably ask you to send it in!
