Hi all, just a quick one. As a rule of thumb what are we saying is a good/acceptable CPU temp under heavy load?
Ie my 166 oc r2 i7 get to around 83-85 c when gaming. While I know I could get it cooler by reapplying thermal paste it's not so easy to find here in Dubai... So at these temps would much be gained by reapplying thermal paste in the way of battery life etc?
Cheers

Wow I live in So-Cal USA, it's about 20-30C indoors here, I have the same machine as you R2 i7 and it's clocked at default. I was getting up to 91C while gaming causing shutdowns and throttling, I recently reapplied my paste and I'm getting up to 86C while gaming. So there is still something wrong with my machine. Reapplying the thermal paste, I used Arctic Silver 5, really did help though, shaved ~20C off my idle temps. I'd really like to clock up to 166, but I have to solve these temp issues first before I'd see any difference because of the throttling. Adding a cooler would probably get your temps down a little more too.
Good thermal paste can be hard to find retail even in Cali, I ordered mine form New Egg. Not sure if they ship to you, but should definitely should be able to find a online retailer like Amazon or someone. -
It also depends on the game you play. Temps skyrocket for me in BFBC2 and Crysis 2. Starcraft 2 never goes above 75C whereas crysis 2 I just hit 87C. I have a small vmod on GPU but I also have additional rubber feet on my laptop that lifts the back up slightly to allow for better airflow. I dont know why you were getting shutdowns and throttling at 91C. The chips should not start throttling until 105C.
To answer the first post question I would say anything below 95C you are fine. The best way to reduce temps (as long as you have a decent application of thermal paste) is to add rubber feets on the back left and right of the laptop to raise it slightly. -
Here are some pics of the rubber feet.
