Hi there. I'm surprised it has been so hard for me to find this, but is there a thread of people's pound for pound comparisons of the performance difference between the R2 and R3? I'm aware people run different configs and a lot of you are overclocking, but it'd be nice to see how a stock R2 compares to a similarly configured stock R3 to see what if any difference the new GPU makes. Would like to see FPS for games like BF:BC2, Crysis 2, etc.

If no such thread exists, consider this one to be it.

    the r3 is faster stock.
BUT, with all the mods and overclocks the r2 can do its easily faster then an r3.

    stock r3 3dmark06 score: about 8k.

best modded r2 3dmark06 score: 9150 (and thats only the i5 cpu)

Either get an R1 for best value or get an R3.

It's no contest to get an r2 now unless you can get it under $800 with at least 6 months of warranty remaining.

Just by getting the base r3 @ $999, you get fresher model, improved new hinge, bluetooth 3.0, usb 3.0, fresher gpu, fresher cpu etc..

So paying $750-800 on an r2 is sucker.

If you can pick up an r1 for less than $600 shipped/taxed and you having cash issues then that is the best pound for pound value.

Payed 599 for mine from the outlet after a coupon , think i got one the last good ones before they jacked up the prices. get whatever is in your price range but as always with laptops get the best one you can possible afford since there are one so many things that can be upgraded unlike desktops.

I'm not much for modding or over clocking and the R3 is definitely faster then the stock R2 (specially the i5 R2 vs i7 R3). Even iTunes videos play smother.

I don't really see how better CPU will allow smoother playing of iTunes videos.
i5 or i7 processors for R2 is way good enough to run those videos at maximum smoothness.
I hope you could have compared with CPU intense games or something.

I got my r2 for about 750shipped from dell outlet about 2 months ago which maxed specs and i don't feel suckered lol Too me i don't see the r3 being worth a extra 250$ well pretty much 300 with tax. The r2 preforms just or good or better overclocked :) And plus that extra 300 can go on better things like a upgrade for my desktop which i just added another 5850 in crossfire with my 5870 which ony costed 130$ :)

If i would have too do it over again i think i still would've went with the r2 under 800$ But than again that's me.

But the 350$ deal coupon that they had was a great deal for a max r3 for around 1200$ that might've had me thinking a bit :)

Either way you cant go wrong with all 3 but ya i wouldn't pay full price for a r2 when it was available new, I think under 800$ for a r2 is a steal. And you get a full 12months warranty when you buy from outlet. Which i even seen a i5 8gb 320gb hdd going for ony around 680shipped in outlet last week with coupon now thats a heck of a deal!

And for the r2 playing videos i don't have no problems running high def videos on 1920x1080 on my dlb 57in no tearing or anything :) Which played max smoothness Heck even my 1201n in sig plays 1080p pretty good lol

But ya if you want the newest best toys and have the money heck buy a r3. But the r2 will do things just as good or better when overclocked.

No, there must be a typo. It's more like a M11x R2, looking at the CPU ;)

That's what I thought. Also it's got the lower-spec graphics card. Oh damn!!!

I have had my m11x r2 for about a year and a half. I have been super satisfied with it but it does start to show its age with more modern games (I am not that intrested in OC'ing)

It depends on what you are interested in but I don't think that I (personally) would buy an r2 nor r3 cause they have too old hardware at this point for the price (imo) and the r4 is probably just around the corner. That is unless you get an excellent deal somewhere, what I mean is that I don't think that they are worth full dell price considering that the r4 modell is going to be in the same price range as the r3 is now.

(I am very much looking forward to the new r4 to exchange my r2)

edit: Ok, now I also see that this is an old thread :)

edit2: clemenzina: The cpu is the same one as in my R2 but with a different graphics card, not quite sure which combination this is. I can't recall the r2 having that gpu. I don't think that the r3 was ever equipped with the cpu from the r2. Everything looks like it could be an r3 except for the cpu. maybe a typo?

I've had an R2 for a bit over a year now. I've been entirely satisfied with it, wasn't as powerful as my custom built desktop, but still powerful enough to run any game I wanted to without over clocking. I dropped it one or two too many times though, and had to replace it with an R3. Based on the reviews I've seen I'm really looking forward to getting my R3. I got an i7 with 4GB ram, a Killer wifi card, and 2GB 540M. I expect it will be quite the upgrade, and after a modest coupon I got it brand new for only slightly more than my dell outlet R2 cost. If I remember I'll update this thred once I finally get in about a week... But I expect good things from it.

It seems the R3 is a much clearer win than R1 vs R2.

By the time I could afford to buy an R4 you'll be telling me it's "too old hardware". I've got a refurb R3 on the way so I'll report in on R1 vs R3. You'll all have to hide if I'm disappointed ;)

you shouldnt be dissapointed, it's impressive. Most impressive. lol. the 540m is about 25% better than the 335M and the CPU will no longer be a bottleneck.
