So, I've had my m11x R3 for about 5 days now and I was wondering if my unit is faulty or do all m11x behave in the same way? Basically, regardless of the game I play, at some point the nvidia GPU reaches 70-75°C and the fan goes to the maximum speed (6800 RPM I believe).

As someone mentioned, this is comparable to the sound a hairdryer does. The games are pretty much unplayable for me unless I use headphones.

A cooling pad set to maximum speed would only help drop 2 or 3 degrees.

I'm still within the 7 days of return period and I'm really wondering what to do...

Are you experiencing the same temps? Maybe it's my particular r3's problem and it can be fixed by Dell.. I don't know..

I found this page where the poster managed to lose about 10° by applying some thermal paste :

M11x Thermal Upgrade and Temp Comparison

I know this will void my warranty but I can't see myself having a hairdryer in front of me for a year :(

    Any advice appreciated..

Edit : forgot to mention my config : it's an i5-2467M/Goferce GT 540M combo. I've also a 7200 RPM drive which doesnt help.
Finally, the CPU stays at constant 50°C iddling (or close to). Not sure if this is normal either.

Your temp seems normal, my cpu idle at 50C too. But anyway CPU could be at 70 and fan would'nt go loud. The gpu is the problem
I have the same problem, the fan start blowing at max speed when GPU hit 67C.

I did the thermal paste + adding copper and it helped a bit but not enough to make the fan silent for games like Skyrim. I don't believe you can lower 10C temps only with thermal paste... The thing i don't understand is there no middle between decent Noise and Hairdryer... It's either silent or very noisy.

The only way of fixing it i think would be thermal paste/load of copper/dual fan cooling dock and a way to lower the fan.
Could under clock the video card too , if you don't play 2012 games...
Heatsink Mod will lower your max temps. I hope i can lower it too 66C <<

Who tell the fan to go max at GPU 67C? The nvidia driver or bios?
There is no option in the bios

Only me and Dreeew is annoyed with fan noise? I wondering if my R3 fan working as intended. I am surprised that not more people complain about it...

If i start Skyrim, after 1min 30sec the fan will kick at max speed and will never stop. Even with headphone it is too loud. I think if i put it in the closet i would still hear it.

Btw i already changed pasta and added copper on the heatsink. I'm pretty sure a bios update would fix this >>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<< DELL ARE YOU LISTENING?

As previously stated in that other thread from which you're taking the hairdryer reference from - Sure the fan kicks in and it's loud, but it is absolutely NOWHERE as loud as you guys claim it is.

If you're a PC enthusiast and have ever built your own PC, you will know how loud having a decent CPU cooler and a few case fans can be. By comparison this is at a bit of a higher pitch because it's a smaller fan spinning faster to over-compensate, but it's not louder than that and it's no hairdryer.

But yes, that is normal. Either accept it, or if it's that big of a deal return it. There is nothing else which can be done.
