I have been offered an bare I7 motherboard at a very reasonable price and am wondering if it is just a case of swapping everything over from my current i3 board and re-using the original heatsink etc on the new board?
Any advise is most gratefully received!!!

from what past revisions offered, yes it is just swapping out the motherboard and connecting the rest to it (sound board bluetooth etc.). I am 95% sure that this is the case.
-
Thanks for the reassurance! I thought that as the i7 is more powerful then the heatsink/fan arrangement my be different. -
It worked fine!!! Took me a couple of hours though and I was worried that the new motherboard ( only a £100!!! ) would be DOA.
I am now the proud owner of an i7 -2617m with the bonus of the extra 1gb on the gpu.
Does anyone know when dell switched from the 2617m to the 2637m? -
it was quite recently, like a month ago or something...
but yeah, grats on the upgrade
-
Cheers mate, the upgrade was well worth it especially as Dell charge £335 for that upgrade!!! and now I have a spare mobo that I can easily sell on for well over a £100 so I will actually make money on the deal. KERCHING!!!

run some benchmarks, it will be good too know what is difference, what about battery ?
-
Agreed, I'd like to see your results!

Sorry, I would have to go thru all the aggro of re-installing the i3 to benchmark against the i7....
May give it a go in a few weeks when time allows, so tell me what software to use for benchmarking and I will give it a go!!! -
3dmark11, 3dmark06, cinebench11, maybe pcmark11, winrar bench, maybe some games etc
GL
but that would be awesome.
R3 Motherboard upgrade i3 to i7!!!
