    Hi guys,
I know the m11x has sleep issues.
I've tried digging for this particular behavior mine is experiencing and haven't found it anywhere.
I have a r3 that I want to go to sleep when the lid is closed. However, when the lid is closed, it's as though the PC doesn't even realize it, or sleep isn't even turned on.
I've updated the chipset drivers to the most recent released, and this hasn't affected anything at all.

    Ideas?

Maybe the power plan you laptop is currently using has the 'Lid Close Action' set to 'Do Nothing.'

I believe I've checked all the obvious things. Went through the power plan pretty heavily and didn't see anything that would prevent it from sleeping :/

Did a little more testing for the heck of it. Even if the it's set to hibernate when closing the lid, it won't even do that. So I believe it comes down to the laptop itself not realizing it's closed. I don't know what would cause that though :/

do you really need stand by and hibernate first? i wouldn't use it for the sake of it being available.

It sounds like there is something wrong with the sensor that tells your M11x when the lid is in the closed position.

You may need to have your machine repaired. If your warranty is still valid I suggest calling the warranty support line. They will probably walk you through the simple stuff (which you have already done) and then schedule an appointment with a tech to fix it.

In the meantime you can use the little right arrow next to the 'Shut Down' option in the windows Start menu to pick either Hibernate or Sleep when you want to use those modes. Or just turn your machine off when you are done with it.

I currently have the power button set to put it into sleep. It's more the fact that a function/feature of my laptop isn't working that's irritating :/ Sadly there is no warranty on this R3 though.

My job is always up and down and it's nice to think that I can just close the lid, and be off to wherever/whatever is calling. I prefer sleep over hibernate FYI. I was simply testing different modes to see how it interacts with the lid closing.

When you close the lid, does the screen turn off?

Perhaps the Hibernate mode is what's broken? Maybe you switched it to Hibernate from StandBy and I missed it.

Try re-installing your graphics drivers from fresh for the intel and nvidia GPU, I had this issue with my R1, in fact my R1 screen used to stay on when closed, then sometimes it would stay turned off when I opened it!!!

Lol, they didnt put the magnet into the top right corner of your LCD. Take a paperclip, put it to the top right corner of your lcd. If it sticks, then the magnet is there, if it doesnt then there is no magnet there. Go to the kitchen, get a magnet from the fridge and put in on right side of the palm rest next to the grill light. The computer should go to sleeep.

Ahh the old fridge magnet trick :D I think some of our M11x are rushed in production or someone comes back from a tea / cigarette break and forgets what they're doing! Never buy anything made on a Monday or a Friday :D haha

When I got my R3, the battery LED meter on the base looked like someone has stabbed a pencil in it! i had to open it up and put a spacer in between the battery LED button and the base-plate, come on Alienware, final QC awareness!!!!

Heh...funny you mention that. I think you indirectly figured it out. I do have a magnet in the screen. Paperclip has confirmed this....however, since my R3 has been built from the ground up. I am currently waiting for the I/O logic board to become available for purchase from Dell. The board that has the headphone jacks, and USB. I'm guessing it serves a third purpose, that of which is sensing the magnet in the screen when in close proximity. That would make sense based on where the I/O board is installed, inside the chassis. Damn... :/

Case solved, but further frustrated with Dell :/ I would think a laptop thats in production, the parts would be readily available, right? Nah...There are no parts available right now, and there isn't any refurbished available....Ugh
