Really weird: my LCD's on-screen menu spawns on its own / won't go away

In 20+ yrs of computing, never seen something like this.

At seemingly random intervals, the on-screen configuration menu for my ViewSonic LCD monitor just pops up on its own. I had to take a camera-pic of it, because print-screen doesn't capture it (because, I guess, it's just an overlay generated by the monitor, not the computer itself):

The grey focus bar (which is highlighting 'MUTE' in the image above) then begins to toggle steadily between MUTE and VOLUME...and just stays like that, toggling endlessly. This is problematic because the overlay obscures anything behind it on my desktop. I can make it go away by turning the monitor off then back on. BUT then it will just happen again with seemingly no provocation. A computer reboot doesn't fix it (in fact, the toggling sometimes starts the moment my desktop boots up...not always but sometimes.) I updated the monitor's drivers; no help.

Really weird, huh? Frankly I'm not even sure this is a computer / OS problem...seems like a monitor problem right? (esp b/c turning monitor off/on fixes it...temporarily).

It has to be a monitor problem, actually it seems to be that the issue is with the buttons on the monitor. Try a different monitor and you'll see that it works just fine. If the monitor still has warranty you should try contacting the manufacturer.

Most definitely monitor problem. If it has no warranty and you feel adventurous, try taking off the case/panel around the buttons and i think you might find some of the button switches getting stuck.
