It seems the most likely issue effecting most devices (m11x R1 in my case) is the requirement of a BIOS update to accommodate modern OS power features. I know it's like beating a dead horse, but has anyone found a work-around yet that doesn't equate to just disabling sleep mode when closing the lid/over time?
I'm currently using Windows 8.1 Pro x64 with the lastest discrete mode Nvidia drivers. I have found that with my setup, if I manually choose sleep from 'right-click' start button option, I'm usually okay and it will resume properly. If I just close the lid, it's a crap shoot whether the dreaded black screen will happen. It almost seems like a delay put in manually for the lid close sleep option would solve it.. or maybe a delay when resuming after opening. Is this possible?

Unfortunately no, and since the Windows 8.1 OS isn't officially supported for your platform, it may not get any sort of update for that.

I'm not sure what changed or what I did.. but sleep is now working fine on my m11x R1 and Windows 8.1 Pro. Perhaps an update resolved it. I did change a setting to disable hybrid sleep and deep sleep after 180min.. and also the 'sleep after' time setting. Now I can just press the power button and then close the lid. I haven't tried solely the lid close action yet.. but at least it's working.

After quite a bit of testing, I've found that the lid close sleep mode still doesn't work. If I configure the power button to sleep or manually engage sleep through windows it works fine and always wakes up (even after closing the lid when sleep is engaged). That's good enough for me.
