I just tried inserting SD card into the slot, and the windows recognizes it, but the SD card is only half way in? Is this way it's designed??? Bah!

In all my past dell laptops, these cards are pushed in, and you push again to take them out.

With the M11x R2, like half of the card sticks out!

    Alienware designs their computers.
They are manufactured by Dell, but not designed by them.

This was mentioned on here before by someone. Most of them are "spring-loaded" i guess this one is not.

At first I was kinda bummed about it sticking out too, but it's actually made me more likely to remember to take it out after I'm done with it. I'm always forgetting them in all my other laptops where the card is fully recessed.

Maybe it's a dell thing for them to be spring loaded and go all the way in, but every HP that i've owned in the past (2 desktops and one laptop) the card has stuck out. I think I like that better, it reminds you not to forget it in your computer :) There HAVE been a few times I go to shoot something with my camera, look down at the display and see the flashing empty symbol >.>

I believe its designed to stick out so it doesnt get stuck in the incase the spring mechanism fails.

If the SD card went all the way in, then they would need to use a larger chassis to accommodate the extra space needed to house a larger SD card reader.

My Dell XPS m1730 sticks out and is spring loaded.

I prefer the mechanical reliability of a non-spring loaded slot but perhaps I'm alone. I do wish it would stick all the way in and just have a thumb recess for removal. That way I could leave a card in there all the time.

Don't you think it really just depends on your use of the slot?

I would really like to be able to have a card stuck in there most of the time for some things but this is just not practical when it is only 1/2 way in.

I have machines that work both ways and I would prefer that they go all te way in,every time.

For those that want it flush and in all the time, some Sandisk SD card have all the memory at the front and are solid plastic in the back - you can literally cut them in half so they fit flush. You'll need tweezers to remove it though.

I would not recommend cutting standard size SD cards, because they look like this internally:

I can confirm that the SD card will only go about half way in on this system. Keep in mind that there is a lot jammed into this little chassis - there simply wasn't enough room to get the card all the way in with the reader located where it is. If it went all the way in, it would hit the RAM sockets.

If you want readyboost get a 1 or 2GB intel turbo memory card. (The 4GB card does application pinning not readyboost) Of course your WWAN slot needs to be free.

I also found an old RS-MMC memory in my old nokia, and it fit in perfectly. but sadly its only 128mb. I tried looking at ebay and it seem that 2gb is the max RS-MMC goes.
