Has anyone tried/tested the 3G sim card slot?

If i insert a sim card will is it pretty much straight forward to connect to the internet as long as i have a phone signal?

Did you order your laptop with wwan?

If not then that slot will do nothing.

ejohnson, as far as i can see on the control panel i have an icon labelled
'DW WLAN' can you confirm if this is what i need or if not how do i check? I haven't yet tried inserting the sim card yet but i'll wait for your response first....

No that is not what you need. Thats for the local area network ( network cable plugged into the side )

If you remove the bottom cover of you computer there should be a open slot that says wwan. Since I see you live in the UK I can be 99% sure you do not have wwan and can not use the 3g card.

I just checked my original order slip and it states the following:

Wireless : Dell Wireless 1520 (802.11n) Half Mini Card

this is to do with the local area network???

WLAN is different from WWAN which is wide from local... in any case try to enable WWAN in the BIOS and pop in a 3G capable sim and see what happens as far as setting up a network goes..

hmmm, i have since inserted my sim card but nothing happened, i guess you need to install drivers for it to work but like ejohnson said, 99% chance i dont have the WWAN.....

I'm assuming by your location, you bought the machine on dell.co.uk, in which case you won't have it, as the WWAN option was never offered in the UK.

You will probably be lacking the card needed to use it, they're about on ebay for like £20

From the looks of it the aerial etc is still present, just not hooked up to the card.
