I need something portable to carry around school with me cause my M15x seems like its gaining weight. I don't plan on getting rid of it but I want something that I can carry with me on the go all the time.

I want to get an M11x R2, but given how fast technology seems to update...

Does anyone think and revision or a possible revamped m11x coming anytime soon?

cause if so i might as well wait......

We expect updates when Sandy Bridge Intel chips are released, most likely Q1 2011. But I may jump on a new one if there is a decent Black Friday sale.

If the revision is going to come it is going to be in the first quarter of 2011. Right now am saving up money for a M11x i-series and should be getting enough money in the spring.

I personally wouldn't bother waiting if I were you, you've already an M15x for more demanding applications.

Besides sandy bridge (which i assume will bring a little bit better power management), 4xx series of graphics (dx11) and probably usb 3.0 ports are there any expected massive leaps in the r3 11x models?

None of those things will probably affect anything i use it for. the 335 gpu will still provide similar performance i would think in the future as the 420, just wont have dx11

    Does that seem right?

The most demanding thing I'd do is sometimes run 1080p videos, play civ 5 or have tons of firefox windows open at once. i dont do much video editing or pshop or anything

You will not see an Alienware M11x anytime soon... at least within the next 9-12 months. If I had to guess, I'd expect an M11 R3 to be released by holiday season 2011.

The Alienware M11x was released less than a year ago, and has already gone through one revision. To release the M11x R3 by Q1 2011 would mean 1 product release + 2 revisions within 1 year.

You will not find any company that produces expensive consumer electronics that releases 2 or 3 revisions to their product per year. Even the most aggressively changing markets like smartphones and GPUs do not do that.

If you cannot afford to wait another year, then my advice is to buy the M11x R2 once you see a good deal on it.

Wait for the R4. It'll blow the R3 out of the water.

Just buy it now. The R2 surprised me with how fast it is. Especially after Overclocking it.

if you can you should but it as a refurb + 25% off coupon... mine came to around 750 with tax (it's like brand new). most of them are 4gb ram and no ssd but if you've already have a m15x that's probably fine (can always add/change hardware components later).

I you find a good deal then go for it, but otherwise wait as long as you like.

There is always going to be something better right around the corner though so any reason to wait now will still be there when the R3 comes out.

I say get the current one on a good deal and a 3 year warranty.

Given what you've fine folks at NBR have said,

I'm gonna see if Dell has a good deal on a Refurb/outlet M11x since were getting close to the holidays. (They usually have good black Friday deals) I really don't mind waiting till January since that's when the new term starts for school.

But if I'm going to wait till January and sandybridge is right around the corner, I might as well just keep waiting.

Regardless I have my M15x. So it all depends what deal I can find next week.

    - Dell usually has week long black Friday deals, and they start this coming Monday!

I would wait, I am pretty sure a new rev or model is just around the corner. I am actually waiting for a DX11 GPU in there before making a move.

I promise you that you will not see an M11x anytime soon, for at least another 9-12 months if not longer.

Might as well wait for R4 or R5 then. No point waiting when it comes to tech.

Or you might as well wait for the R9 or R10, I think it would be able to run SC4 at the fullest settings.

It all depends on your needs. Personally I couldn't wait any longer to get my R2 because i really needed a laptop for mobility.

Also, the first couple months after a new revision, you can expect some bugs so that might be another couple months waiting.
Another concern is packing more powerful hardware, but not improving battery... It might kill battery life on this laptop.

I think the OP's question has been answered. Only the OP can decide. There will always be something new on the horizon. This is just simply the case in the notebook world. Threads like this always end the same way. ;) Buy now or wait, the choice is yours.
