    Hi all,

Just got my M11x. Love it, except the shutdown times are crazy long. Like 2+ minutes! Start up times are not the best either. They are about 1 minute from the time i touch the button to desktop. Does this sound right to you guys? I have the CPU oc'd to 1.7 with the 5400 rpm hd and 4gb ram.

    Thanks everyone

You have a 5400 rpm drive which is very slow.

a 5400rpm drive shouldn't have anywhere near that sort of impact on shutdown time.

My aging ASUS F3JP w/ 5400rpm drive Win7 x64 takes 38 seconds to shut down. That's with Firefox and Outlook open.

im pretty sure there is some sort of hardware issue with this thing. I even did a clean install with the supplied win7 disc, blew away all partitions, flashed to A4 bios, and it still takes forever to shutdown. Any ideas out there?

If I'm not mistaken, excessive shutdown/startup times are logged in 7.

    Try...

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Performance Information and Tools\Advanced Tools

Look in "View performance details in the Event log"

I don't have any shutdown errors there, but I'm pretty sure I've seen them logged there. Typically you'll see a driver or service that's not playing nice.

Are automatic updates turned on? Maybe it's installing Windows updates in the background...

there are hundreds of logs in there. Most of them windows services like SVCHOST, mscorsvw, etc.. some are miniport driver, WLAN driver, Nvidia driver. All they say is that they took longer then expected to load. Whats the deal? i used all the newest drivers from the Dell site.. Is my CPU just dog slow?

Check your memory to make sure it's seated. Think someone mentioned that being a problem here recently. You've definitely got something going on and I think you're right about it being hardware.

Might want to see if your drive is excessively fragmented. Download MyDefrag.

I already defraged with O&O defrag (tried access and date). Just tried reseating the ram, no dice. I kind of figured something was wrong when I loaded up TF2 for the first time. It just didn't perform like everyone raves about. Man, looks like I gotta call the helpdesk. Im probably going to end up with a reconditioned m11x or something. bummer... Maybe I'll see if they can give me a deal on an i7 model?? hmmmmm...
