I have an external drive, but I can't install the only game I currently have...
I downloaded an image, but it wouldn't run either, what can I do?

Myst 5 is the game I am trying to install, something oldie, but I've never finished it, and I want it!
Maybe later this week I'll get another game, but still, I want to know what to do!!

Its kind of a noob question :p

If you own the games legally you can rip them yourself (unless there is some sort of DRM)

With an ultra-portable gaming machine like the M11x, you're really best placed signing up accounts with the major providers of games online. As others have mentioned, Steam is the biggest ( www.steampowered.com). It's an online store and community where you can chat with others about games, build friends lists and of course browse, buy and download games. Those games do not require a CD drive to run, Steam usually has a pretty up to date catalog of titles. Think of them as iTunes, for games.

Alternatives that you should also look into would be Impulse (impulsedriven.com) and gog.com. Given that you like Myst, you'd probably really like what Gog.com have to offer. They take the older games, tweak them a little to make them run on modern operating systems like Windows 7 and modern hardware like the M11x, and then sell them very cheap. For example, Baldurs Gate with all the expansion packs retails on Gog.com for 9.99. The original Fallout games go for around $5.00. Again, no CD required. Just log on, browse and buy.

As for ripping games, that's really only going to work with games that don't have any copy protection and honestly I think it's probably going to give you more problems than it's worth at this stage. Go google around for "Making an iso image", "Installing a game from an iso image", "Running a game without a cd drive" and stuff like that - plenty of forums out there that will offer you step by step advice on the software to use , and how to use it.

There is however some debate as to legality of even ripping games you own. If you're in the US you would be violating the DMCA.

i just thought of this: i forgot that the m11x has no disic drive. so you should load the game to another computer then copy it to a external HDD

Do Steam games require being online all the time even if they are single-player only and not multiplayer like Counter-Strike Source after you DL a game? For example a game like Far Cry or F.E.A.R when downloaded through steam and saved on your HD in the m11x, when playing an offline single player game like FC or F.E.A.R do you need to have internet and online on Steam or what?

What I've done is rip the files off a CD/DVD that I own and pop them onto my external hard drive from a different laptop. Plug the external into the M11x and then install from there. Steam is probably your best bet as you'll need an external hard drive or optical drive if you want to install stuff onto the M11x. I'd also recommend Daemon Tools Lite if you have any isos. Alternatively, you could just extract the iso and run the setup from there.

Like mentioned above Steam works as well as '.iso' files that are mountable virtual DVD's. Of course you need a software for this, any free one works fine like Daemon Tools Lite or Virutal Clone Drive

If you're going to go the .iso route and willing to pay a small amount of money for a program I like PowerISO as it has both iso creating and virtual drives in one program ;)

Ok from the sounds of the OP's opening post it sounds as if he has an external DVD drive (removing the requirement to use a Virtual drive / iso rip) but is still having trouble with installing Myst 5. Is this a problem that the game is not compatible with Win 7?

The only thing I can think of is to try and install the game in compatability mode (right click on the setup file and it should be there on the context menu).

If this doesn't work then google will most likely be your friend in trying to get it to work.

Right click on the setup.exe on the Myst DVD disk and choose compatability mode. The game probably needs some help to run in Windows 7 and check the Run as Administrator box while you're at it.
I've found Steam to be a big pain in the a*ss. It's always trying to connect and download stuff and it's difficult to play offline with it. Since I have limited bandwidth with my satellite service, it has often caused me to pay big bucks for going over my limit and with some contracts you could be banned for life by downloading a huge amount. It has a sneaky way of staying connected when you don't know it and downloading large updates.
If you have genuine unlimited bandwidth, it's okay, I guess, but the Steam software is always buggy and problematic. I much prefer to just install my games from a disk to my hard drive and skip Steam.
....Waiting to see if this post is deleted, since I never see any criticism of Steam on this forum. ;)
