Well yesterday my 2 yr old son who is amazed by my M11xr1 lights finally got his hands on it and droped it on the floor from the kitchen counter to the hardwood floor.. Well I was thinking it should be ok so I shut in down and restarted..
Nothing, only thing comming on is the key board lights.. Screen is black and i cant hear the HD spinning either I think she is really dead this time. Well called Alienware tech support and its going to have to be sent in wich kinda has me worried im not going to get my r1 back.. I have loved my R1 because of the switchable graphics without optimus.. well good news is I bought the warranty that covers these mishaps thank god![]()
I guess what im getting to here is has anyone sent there R1's in for repair and ended up getting a R2 or 3 back?
I have sent laptops in to dell in the past and never recived the same laptop i sent in.

Dell will sort you out you do not need to worry especially if you are within warranty.
Most companies will replace something that cannot be fixed with a model that is of the same retail value however as you would want it replaced with an M11x as there is nothing else like it you might be lucky. If it has a HDD and not an SSD my money would be on the hard drive being broken and there are several modules attached to the motherboard that could have come loose causing it to not turn on.
I would say make him get a paper round and pay off the damage, but 2 is a bit young for that 8) -
I've heard of it, yeah. Problem is now they don't manufacture M11's anymore so they might even upgrade you to a M14.
I love my little cousin but I'd never let her touch my M14.. Accidents happen, but hey they're only accidents and your covered so no worries, good thing you have a warranty hehe. -
They dont manufacture M11's anymore is this true?? wow ive not been keeping up with the M11 forums recently but i had no idea they stoped manufacturing m11's sounds like a step back i love my mini gamming rig.. ofcourse if they offer me a m14 im not going to cry about either
but right now i just want a working laptop. The coffin from dell is on the way so we will see what happens over the next week or two ill keep the thread updated just in case anyone else ends up breaking there m11's and still has warranty..
-
They will have spare parts though and will have some M11's in stock they have to in order to be able to honour warranties. I cannot see them giving an M14x you would probably get an Inspiron or something.

I am sure they will fix it or replace it with another m11x most companies are fair.
However in the small print it does say they can replace it with anything else of equal retail value that is the norm. -
Hmm, did you disable the freefall sensor? I thought it was supposed to save your laptop from 2 year old's. Or are 2 year old's beyond its power? To be honest, I always thought it was a gimmick and only really supposed to help mitigate any damage and not stop it. Good luck on the repair! I had trouble typing this because my 2 key no longer works :s

The freefall sensor simply turns off the HDD so the heads aren't spinning when it impacts the ground. Its primary function is reducing data loss, that's it.
It can't do anything to cushion a 5 foot fall, can it? I highly doubt it has the ability to deploy airbags in mid-air. Doesn't matter what it is tbh, any delicate electronics dropped from that height is almost guaranteed dead. The culprit here is most probably a crack in the motherboard somewhere from the impact. -
or a component is unseated... I would let warranty guys sort it (actually *I* would check first) but if you like, have a look at HD connection and memory.
If though there isn't any POST beeps I would lean toward parts breakage. -
-
They're still selling the m11x R3 on the website. Why not giving an R3 instead of a m14x? xD
-
No beeps, no post... I'd say she's terminal I'm afraid. And in a mainboard way which would be extremely difficult to fix, as other components failing would be indicated by beeps, and a failure of the power would not allow lights to come on. Pop the HDD out and put it into an enclosure to see if the drive managed to safely shut down and you might be able to recover the data off it. As Xsonic suggests, you could go for an upgrade now, and since the M11x is EOF, might be able to find some good deals in the outlet store.

Drop down to one mem slot and try each in turn. I had a mb failure that went through that issue. No POST just momentary lights.
It would allow for some last minute access before servicing. -
