Okay so I was using my M11x, it was working fine. I then went through my installed programs list to clean up a few things. I chose to uninstall 3Dmark06 and then my computer froze, reset and blue screen upon resetting. Every time I boot it displays the loading Windows screen for about 5 seconds and then blue screens. I've tried disabling things in the BIOS and everything and still no luck. So I decided to re install windows, but before I did I plugged the HDD into an adapter so I can get my files off of. When I looked through my files there was NOTHING there, everything had dissapeared. Not only that, the full 500GB of my hard drive was missing. Only two folders called "Emergency" and "recovery were there, and only 14GB of my total HDD space was showing. I was aware that a dell program may have done this so I launched start up repair and laucnhed the dell data recovery program. I got an error with that and I can't use it either, nor can I use the windows start up repair. This is frustrating me a fair bit as I have very important files. Help please :(

What are you using to read the data off the drive? Are you just plugging it into Windows, and it doesn't show up there? That would be good news as your stuff is probably there. Even if not, the fact that Windows was able to partially boot shows data is there despite it not showing up however you're trying to read it.

Umm, it's adapter that lets you plug it into another computer via usb which came from a pulled apart portable hard drive. I plugged it into my friends laptop which is running windows 7 and nothing shows up, only the two folders I mentioned. Yeah I guess it is a good sign...just wish I could be able to find it

What is the exact error you are seeing when attempting to boot into DataSafe Local's Recovery media?

I take it you are using the recovery flash drive or recovery discs you created, right?

Need the error message. Is it:

"0xc000000e – The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.”

Ok, do you want to try to repair Windows or just backup your files and reinstall?

To repair Windows, you'll need to write down what the blue screen says.

If you want to backup and reinstall, and the first thing I would try is Hiren's BootCD 10.6 and All Other Versions - HTTP Download. Download, burn, boot the cd on your friend's laptop with your drive plugged in. From that website:
If you go the second route and Hiren's bootcd doesn't work, let me know and I can give other options.

I'm using the program that' was installed when I got it, no recovery discs ect. Even though I do have them and could easily just recover my system..I need the files on the hard drive so I can't really do that...anyway the Error message is this:
    Dell data recovery error:

    Windows system recovery error:

Was to lazy to type it all tehe

Umm either, but repair would be good since I have programs on it that I don't have the setup files anymore. I don't even have enough time to see the error message the blue screen is giving me, it comes up and goes in the blink of an eye and no way possible to read it. :

Well what are the other options, since I don't have any CD's at the moment to burn to, and I'm too poor to buy any either :p

oof no blank cd's eh? I'm more familiar with Linux and was going to tell you to burn a live cd and give you instructions through that :p

Let's see how my google-fu is:

looks like this program might work Partition Find and Mount — free partition recovery software (plug your hd into your friend's comp and install the program). It has a guide: Partition Find and Mount: How to Use

here's another to try from your friend's comp: Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download

another: TestDisk - CGSecurity <--that one might be the one to try first actually. it looks like it can do *a lot* and has guides right there

another, looks simple: Roadkil.Net - Roadkil's Undelete Program Download

this one seems like overkill, since it's made to recover data off hard drives with physical damage, but i don't see why it wouldn't work: Roadkil.Net - Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier Program Download

How resolve the error 0x8007007B when I run System Restore in Microsoft® Windows Vista?? | Dell

that's the error I'm getting for start up recovery (thanks for the link ;) ) But the problem is I can't actually get into the OS to fix it. It's so frustrating! oh and get this, it happened 15 minutes after the dell guy came to fix my hinge. Just my luck :).

To fix the hinge, did the dell guy have to open up the laptop? It could also mean that your hard drive is starting to fail.

Can you get into a command prompt via the OS disk? If so, could run a CHKDSK /F on it, see what it says. Might take a while though.

Yeah I could, but I just formatted it, took me around 3 hours to try and format it because every program I used just gave me errors. But the good ol' XP disc formatting tool came to the rescue :D Everything seems to be fine with the fresh install, no problems with the hard drive.....as of yet. :\
