    hi

Before my m11x arrives i plan to buy an external dvd drive simply for ease sake. Can anyone suggest a decent quality not-too-expensive drive?

    thanks

I was able to find the same Targus external DVD-ROM drive Dell offers on buy.com at a much cheaper price. It's not the fastest thing in the world, but it works and is very portable. I usually tote it around to my g/f's house to watch movies. Hope that helps!

Just make sure it says RW. Some are just DVD. that are 39.99 vs 59.99... The 59.99 ones are mostly the RW's.

    DVD = player only
DVD RW = player and burner ( recorder )

Most DVD RW will burn to CD RW also.
    - and + is just the type of disc you will need to buy to record. Also type of disc it will read.

They are all pretty much the same.. some dual layer( Can burn on other side of the disc ) Some are Lightscribe.. Can make a lable of your own.. Some are Blue - Ray. the $120+ range .

You need one for your Windows 7 recovery disc they include with your M11x.. ( A DVD player ) RW or DVD you won't NEED a blue ray for that purpose.

This is why I just went out and bought :

this DVD by Gear Head at Frys for 59.99 - $20.00 instant. Works perfect. Like dirkdaring said.. uses one usb.

    Interface
    USB 1.1/2.0, Front Tray Loading

    Buffer Size: 2MB Buffer

24x CD Write Speed, 24x CD Rewrite Speed, 24x CD Read Speed, 6x DVD+R Double Layer Write Speed, 6x DVD-R Dual Layer Write Speed, 8x DVD+ Write Speed, 8x DVD+ Rewrite Speed, 8x DVD- Write Speed, 6x DVD- Rewrite Speed, 8x DVD Read Speed, 5x DVD-RAM Read Speed, 5x DVD-RAM Write Speed

Supported Windows Operating Systems: Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, Vista ( works with my 7 HP )

    USB Device Cable
Drivers & Utilities, Nero Essentials 7
    1 Year Limited Warranty

Although it's not a Samsung it works fine :) I played Night at the Museum on it the other night.. besides using it for a fresh Windows 7 install on my SSD Intel X25-M 80 gig. I used it once to back up a file on a blank CD. No issues.

Just depends on where you shop. Prices? A family member likes the vertical ASUS one found at Newegg
I like the concept that it is a portable DVD player and burner in one and simply plug n play.. I wish I had one a long time ago when I was debating on replacing my DVD burner on my desktop.. This works better then my HP .

Also has a 150usd cousin  - that plays blurays.

There are external DVD drives that are big and uses an AC adapter, those have burn and read speeds like a Desktop machines, those Slim drives are very slow in read/burn speeds, but you can take them anywhere...

I´mb gonna buy a slim one later, the Samsung model looks awesome...

Got the drive today and tested it on my current laptop (m11x still hasnt arrived) and it works great. speed is fine with both usb's plugged in. size isnt as small as i was expecting but i didnt look at the dimensions and i guess its not possible for it to be any slimmer

I have an Asus USB-powered DVD burner from Fry's for $30 after rebate (Black Friday deal), an LG slim USB-powered one from 2008 when they were still over $100, and a Panasonic slimline EIDE Blu-Ray burner pulled from a 2006 Sony Vaio notebook that I put inside a USB-powered enclosure I ordered for a few dollars on eBay and a faceplate for only a couple more. All three work great and do not require a second USB port or external power.

I like that I can stick the Asus and LG ones to the back of the LCD with double-sided suction cups from eBay but the enclosure I ordered has a grainy texture. I sometimes do the same thing when tethering with my phone but if often weighs everything down and pulls the notebook display down!

While it has an interesting load mechanism, the Targus one is not a DVD burner. You can find those everywhere... Fry's, Target, some drugstores... I think they got a good deal on some drives intended for portable DVD players and decided to repurpose them for netbooks.
