Did you return your machine? Mine just freeze at log on screen. This is my second machine already, really don't know what to do![]()

return to stock speed

Stop overclocking so aggressively.
You know, there are other overclocking options besides "Disabled" and "166Mhz". Maybe you should try something a little lower than 166Mhz? What do you think? -
-
Normally I wouldn't even think about OC, but Dell advertise like you are supposed to. The CPU is too weak to handle games like Splinter Cell Conviction...SC2 is coming and I dun see how I can play on this machine...
-
Well I would call Dell and see if you can step up to an R2.

@Joncolbert - Please try the following...
1. Reseat your memory.
If you still blue screen after taking the memory completely out and putting it back in...
2. Boot up without OC and then uninstall Internet Explorer 8.
If you still blue screen after uninstalling
3. Uninstall your nvidia driver completely.
Try booting into the operating system again.
if you still blue screen, try booting into safe mode. to do this constantly hit the F8 key right after the screen dissappears that says F2 for setup.
Let us know if you can boot into SAFE mode with OC enabled.
Respond back after all of these... Hope it goes well...!

After uninstalling the nvidia driver, I was able to browse internet but BSOD immediately when I launched Splinter Cell Conviction.
It said 1. Check disk spaces 2. driver update
STOP: 0x0000001E(0xFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFF8000316C875,0x0000000000000000,0x000000390000009C) -

@Jon - My next suggestion is to download the latest official display/video driver from dell for the R1. I think it's like 197.72 or something like that. Download and install. Please dont try and play any games or anything until you do this. Also please dont install any Nvidia Ntune apps either. These will cause blue screens as well. There are certain apps that cause blue screens. Nvidia system tools, aka NTUNE does this. It did it on my machine.
Keep trucking at it.
I believe that if you can Overclock the cpu and boot into windos safe mode that the issue is software or driver related. By eliminating all of them one at a time we can hopefully resolve the bsod issue.
Best Wishes,
StevenX -
It froze again at log on screen after I reinstalled the nvidia driver. Should I just disable the graphics switch?
-
stevenxowens792 Notebook Virtuoso
Even when going into safe mode? Which is F8 (press it fast and alot) after the F2 screen.
You know you did it right because it will bring up another menu that says something like WINDOWS SAFE MODE, SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING etc..e tc...
Choose safe mode with networking.
StevenX -
It had no problem go into the safe mode and the normal windows without the dell 192.72 driver.
But the machine freezes if I have my nividia driver at normal windows, so the dell 192.72 driver is causing the crash?
I am thinking about disable the graphics switch. How do I do it? There was a post about the pros and cons of switchable graphics vs optimus but I still don't understand how to install the nvidia 2xx.xx driver. -
stevenxowens792 Notebook Virtuoso
@John - shut off the notebook. Go into the bios by hitting F2 when you see it on the screen. There will be some options at the top. I think it is system options.. Then toward the very bottom of the screen it says GRAPHICS - > Switchable --------- Change this to Discrete. Then go to the exit tab. Choose Exit Saving Changes and see what happens. I am not in front of my M11x right now so I so please excuse if my terminology is not 100 percent.
It also may be that you need to COMPLETELY remove the old graphics driver. This involves un-installing the nvidia driver in the control panel. Then booting into safe mode. Using a tool like driver-cleaner or driver remover - then booting back into regular windows mode. Then installing a fresh download of the driver with NO updated INFs or any mods.
Keep us posted. I am pretty busy right now but I will try to help as best as possible.
BW,
StevenX -
After uninstalling IE8 and Dell display driver, disabling graphics switch, and put on the nvida 258.92 verde. I am now able to log on to desktop occasionally(BSOD within 3 minutes).
I did notice a performance increase from the new driver when playing Splinter Cell Conviction(without OC).
Thats all I have now. Thanks again Steve.
BTW, do I need to "repair" the OS after so many BSODs? -
stevenxowens792 Notebook Virtuoso
@John - something is still not right if you are getting the bsod. Have you tried to completely restore the operating system? To me you really have to oc the cpu to get the most gaming opportunity out of the system. I would restore the operating system or load it from scratch, install all the latest drivers from dell and see if it does the same thing. Sorry to hear of the issues. Keep rolling... StevenX
-
Steave there is nothing wrong. His chip can not handle the O/C plain and simple. It probably just needs a tab more voltage to be stable.
-
Yeah I just got a brand new hard drive from Dell.
I guess it is really a hardware problem.
Bad thing is I got this machine from eBay, so I can't return it. -
stevenxowens792 Notebook Virtuoso
Then I would contact Dell and get a replacement mb and processor. Plain and simple. I still am not convinced it is a cpu issue. The reason I say that is because he can boot into the os in safe mode. It doesn't downclock the cpu to do this. It still runs at 1.73 If it were my machine.. I would leave it oc. Blow away the windows load all together. Format drive, install windows 7 from scratch. See how far it goes...If it loads completely then slowly start to add drivers from Dell.. STARTING with video driver. Then audio and anything else...
But.. before you go further.. can you do me a favor please... Go into the bios again (remember F2).. disable, all the other items that take up voltage..
Starting with blue tooth... then firewire which is 1394, then ethernet (whichever one you dont use) . Start with these three. Boot into the Regular windows 7 and see what happens.
Best wishes, StevenX -
It doesn't BSOD in safe mode but the system is not usable at all. Google Chrome crashed three times in five minutes as I was trying this reply.
I can do a flash install with the recovery DVD. The problem is I only have a 4GB flash drive and the size of that DVD is a little bit larger than that. Another member unreal25 has posted a very detail instruction on how to load the image onto a USB drive and it worked! Do you know how to trim down the image?
I did what you asked, but it BSODed
Many thanks to you Steve -
Before buying my m11x I was worried about if mine would have the problem of OC (I mean, that I was not able to OC my machine).
First time I OC my machine was some minutes after i got it. Nowdays my machine has work great even OverClocked :3 (Im lucky)

stevenxowens792 Notebook Virtuoso
@John - I fall into Vallejo's boat. I oc'd mine the moment after I got off the phone with Dell/Alienware because mine would not power up out of the box. (The simple issue was that the memory shook loose in transit)
Now... Alienware will say "we dont actually support the oc of the cpu". Go at the situation from a different perspective. Dont say "i can't oc my cpu" Ask to have the items replaced due to "issues" you are having. Lockups, performance, etc...
Explain to dell you have already reloaded/re-imaged. It's locking up, all drivers are dell default drivers. Start with the replacement of the system board and processor. Be polite but firm. (dont tell them the bios oc is set to enabled)... It sounds a bit dodgey but the fact is the sold a machine, from factory that was advertised to OC the cpu. You are asking for nothing more than to be able to do what the machine was advertised to do...
I am sorry I can't do too much more from this end. Without me sitting in front of it, playing with it, It's hard to fix it or find root cause.
Keep us posted.

I had my MB replaced as the OC wouldnt work either. With no other changes the MB replacement was OC and stable.
-
How long does it take for the tech support to reply back? We talked a bit on the phone then he had me emailing him additional information but he never replied back...
-
stevenxowens792 Notebook Virtuoso
@Jon - Continue to call and/or email until you get a response. I would say to be polite but persistant.
Good luck,
StevenX -
Just finished calling. The rep updated my driver, saw the event viewer and did a memory test. He had me now doing a full diagnostics test(the f12 one) and would call back later the day.
I am not very good with computer, how should I go from here to get him send a guy to replace my motherboard(I did not mention OC)? -
stevenxowens792 Notebook Virtuoso
See what they gather from the diagnostics. They may decide to replace memory. Depends on what they find. The thing to stress is stability, or lack of stability.
BW, StevenX -
Hey steve thanks again, I got it just now. I was even sent to the manager and he said he would give me the best people the have. Plus, they would follow up on my case.
-
stevenxowens792 Notebook Virtuoso
@Jon - no worries. I just hope they get the issue taken care of for you.
Best Wishes,
StevenX -
My machine is now stable @ 1.73Mhz after a motherboard surgery today

Congratulations. I know it stinks sometimes but patience and persistence go a long way. I am truly glad to hear it. Now.. CRANK IT UP, OPTIMIZE, GAME and does us all a favor... GO SHOOT SOME CAMPERS...
The best way to save a soldier is to shoot a camper... (that is my motto)
