My cpu is getting up to 82C while playing Oblivion.

    Is this too high?

No, not really. I do recommend cleaning out your HSF, or maybe reapplying the TIM, if you are inclined to :)

My m11x doesn't get that hot (62C with a reporposed wireframe "airflow cage"/ 78C with it flat on my desk).

Its not a temp you should really worry about but it is high, graded you might be playing on really high settings.

For the m11x, it's within ballpark range :( My last match of SC2 netted me around the 78C range - though I was playing on a chair... (while sitting on the ground).

With a cooler my temps never go up past 54C and that is overclocked to the highest, safest clock speeds whilst playing Crysis. Without the cooler on I get closer to 60C while playing. This is an R1 with the latest BIOS update. So those temps posted are a bit too hot for my tastes.

For reference, that's almost 180 degrees. Granted, your laptop can take it, but R2s seem to get super hot.

Mine stays cool during gaming/multitasking, and the fan never gets to an audible level. But then again I have an r1. As for your temps, they are within spec but still warm. I would look into cleaning dust out, possibly new thermal grease, and maybe a cooler.

My i5 R2 is overclocked to 166MHz and I use ThrottleStop when gaming. When playing the most recent Wolfenstein game the last few evenings, I check the temps when I am done. I generally hit a max of 79°C (once it got to 85°C). Although, this is on a bed with a ½" thick coaster raising up the back left corner for air intake. I have never had any crashes [knocks on wood]. With a cooler, the max stays around 72°C.

    General use is around 50-55°C.

Just a desktop "in box" that's turned upside down. I used them in the past to support a small array of D820s running VMs :p

It should be noted that different programs report temps differently, and the R2 runs hotter than the R1. NBR should really make a rule about reporting temps to standardize things a bit, it makes it otherwise very difficult to compare.

Using Throttlestop's cpu temp reporting I get 80-82C with heavy (1+ hours) of gaming with an OC of 166Mhz and TS 100/100 when the laptop is flat on a table, and about 67-71C with a cooler.

    It idles at 54-55C w/o a cooler (48C with a cooler).

    I have an R2.

For those who are curious, Throttle Stop and Real Temp were both created by UncleWebb of NBR :p

I get to 78 when i game on a flat surface, and about 60 when im on my notebook cooler (Zalman NC Series, HIGHLY recommend).

if i dont have my cooler with me, i just put a coaster underneath the back, and it will lower it from like 78 to 70-73, just getting airflow underneath....

I use the one that is in ThrottleStop. It puts a monitoring icon in your system tray. When you hover the mouse over it, it tells you the current and min/max temperatures.

For prolonged gaming I just run my power cord under the back side. Shaves a few degrees off.

Tjunction is 105*c for these cpus. So once you hit that temp your computer shuts down to prevent damage to your cpu. Although all temps under this are within specification, once you start running hotter than 74-75, you can start damaging the cpu and greatly decreasing its life span.

I thought that too however Uncle Webb insured me that these chips are tested at 105c. In which 46-104 degrees should not have any effect on the chips.

No. The CPU begins to damage itself the second it starts cycling, independent of the temperature. The temperature will of course accelerate damage, but these chips are guaranteed fault free for 7 years at temps within spec (in fact, internally Intel tests at 125-130C). Intel deliberately engineers in redundant IC's for both critical and non-critical functions, which is why their chips can take a serious beating.

I would be far more worried about other components failing due to heat rather than the CPU.

My m11x R2 gets seriously hot, and now I'm at the point where I think there must be something seriously wrong.
I can only play for about 15 mins with no overclocking until it reaches about 90C, and at this point the cpu will cut its functioning by half, which makes sure the temp doesn't rise any more, yet it also means that performance is decreased by half.
If I force the cpu to keep working fully with throttlestop, then within 2 mins it will reach 105C and crash the laptop...
So I can either only play games with bad lag due to the cpu operating at 50%, otherwise it crashes.

Obviously there is something wrong, but how can I convince alienware of this so they'll fix it (I have a 3 yr guaranty). The laptop still works, just no where near as well as it should, so will they tell me no?
