Hello everyone, i just got my M11X 2 days ago and I am having a problem. When i first unboxed it i immediately installed my favorite game Team Fortress 2 from steam. I am having some problems running it at normal settings. This may be do to the fact my Processor is not overclocking as it should, I thought that the new intel cores had automatic overclocking, but according to CPU-Z my processor did not go above the original 1.20ghz, am i missing something here? Do i need to manually overclock it, if so how?
A second explanation is that i am running the game at to high a demand, Although i have run it on my desktop that has a far worse graphic card and it can run it with maxed out preferences. Is TF2 a high demanding CPU game?
Sorry If sound like a nub about this stuff, that probably because i am hehe.
Edit:
Thought I would show you guys what i meant heres a screen shot, i cant even get 10 fps with my settings at a minimum

Hey man, to overclock your CPU, use this video:
YouTube - How to overclock Alienware M11x CPU‎
It sounds like you're running your TF2 from the integrated graphics. You need to whitelist your TF2.exe, which you do by:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U874jC2blJQ
Cheers! -

There is no need at all to overclock. Especially for the source engine. -
-
Ok guys, i white listed the application like you said, and the performance did seem to go up a little, however my fps is still low on the minimum settings. any tweeks to the settings that might make it faster?
never went past 13 fps -
Yeah, pretty sure you're still on the Integrated.
Here's the step-by-step.
"Once you have installed your Steam game, create a shortcut from your Steam games list. Once the shortcut appears on the desktop, follow the instructions below.
Open the NVIDIA Control Panel.
Select Manage 3D Settings.
Select Program Settings tab.
Click Add.
Browse to and select the application executable file that needs the new profile.
Choose the preferred graphics processor to use from the drop menu."
Have you played any other games on your system? -
When i make a shortcut to the game on my desktop it makes a steam link that opens it through steam so i had to go to:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\[My steam username]\team fortress 2\hl.exe
and i end up with this:
why it says half-life, i have know idea. might it be that i need to link it to another application? -
Enable multicore rendering in Tf2 it makes a big difference!

So what drivers are you running? 258.96 and modded .inf works fine for me. Just been playing TF2.

Are you sure you're on high performance mode for your power plan?
I get 30+ outputting to 1650x1050 on highest settings I believe. -
Power option is set at high and i think i have the latest drivers, im gonna re-download just in case now
-
Make sure you have turboboost on also. You should be seeing speeds of up to 2.2ghz WITHOUT any overclocking and turboboost on.
Edit: 2.2ghz on a single core, max of 1.8 for both cores. -
How do i turn on turbo boost?
-
It's on by default. It's a setting in the BIOS advanced menu.
-
I did not mess with the bios, so that cant be the problem. Im noticing that when i select the direct EXE file in the white list it will not let me apply. If you dont understand what im mean i would be happy to upload a video.
-
Turbo boost doesn't have anything to do with white listing applications in the Nvidia control panel. It's a setting for the CPU.
miXwui was just suggesting that you don't disable that in order to get the best performance in general. -
Ok its hard to explain. Heres what i did:
1. I created a shortcut for team fortress 2 on my desktop
2. I opened my NVIDIA control panel in order to add the
application to my white list.
3. I discover that you cannot add the short-cut because is does not lead to a specific executable program instead it is a script to open an off branch of steam.
4. so i try to link they direct application by linking the specific executable located in: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\[My steam username]\team fortress 2\hl.exe
5. But to my surprize my white list does not recognize it as an application and i cannot apply the changes.
so my question is this. How can i add the executable file to my white list? -
You need to upgrade your video drivers to 250+. Your system came with the old 189 drivers. The new drivers will fix your problem. UPGRADE!
-
Once you update your drivers. Restart your computer. Then under 3d management youll see valve steam. Then set it too 335m card. I had this same problem. Its a simple fix. + rep me if it works, thanks. I dont know why dell sucks so bad at installing the most up to date drivers.

You need to whitelist HL2.exe. These games are all mods off of half-life 2 and its corresponding engine.
These were my steps to get 30-50 fps @ 1620x1080 med 2xAA settings:
1. Updated to the 258.xx driver set Here
2. Setup a whitelist profile for HL2.exe
3. Ran game...game settings appeared to configure themselves after detecting my GPU (previously TF2 couldn't detect my card)
My CPU is OCed but just to 160 and I get between 2.3-2.5 after turboboost while running tf2. -
No you cant add hl2.exe its a empty exe. Add steam.exe. When you update it will do it automatically
