Any new info on when/if the M11X will come with Sandy Bridge?

And if it it does come out, do you think it's enough of an upgrade to wait? I suppose that varies for each person I guess. But if it is a potentially huge upgrade I might just wait. Especially if I want to run Elder Scrolls 5 towards the end of the year.

Otherwise, am very tempted to just go ahead and pull the trigger on the R2. It seems to be able to run anything I wish to play right now. Just wonder about down the line and stuff.

    What do you all think?

    Thanks!

    Joe

i was in the same boat and because of the sandy bridge recall which could have potentially delayed the R3 (we still don't know if the R3 will even use sandy bridge) and so any news of it would be put back till the mid year for anything that resembles an announcement. i seriously could not bear the wait for even the announcement of the R3.

if you want one now then get one: i did though i am still waiting for mine to be delivered. i am sure you are aware of the potential issues with the R2 so just take that into consideration.

I would recommend picking up an R1 or R2 i5 for cheap. Check out the Dell Outlet for good deals on refurbs. The resale on eBay is pretty good...so you can enjoy a nice laptop for a few months and then decide to upgrade later (or not).

Thanks for the info and suggestions.

I might look into a refurb for the time being. I had good luck several years ago when I bought a Dell Inspiron refurb. It still works to this day. So am definitely open to looking at refurbished M11x's.

And yeah, that Sandy Bridge recall might be putting a dent into possible availability of it in many other computers -- not just Alienware's. So it may be awhile before we see one so equipped. Oh well.

    Thanks again for the suggestions.

The M11x is likely not affected by the Sandy Bridge chipset recalls. Intel has already resumed shipments of the defect chipset to manufacturers provided that they don't use the defect SATA 2 ports.

The LV/ULV Sandy Bridge CPUs will be launched February 20th. There is still a good chance you can see a Sandy Bridge M11x R3 being launched in March. And if they do, they likely added a newer GPU in there as well.

Of course, opinions differ, and you can wait forever. See the M11x R3 thread...

meaning you can only use 6gbps sockets and not the 3gbps sockets as the defect only affect the 3gbps slot. that might work for desktops but not sure on notebooks!

Yes, 2 SATA 3 ports (6gbps) will be available. Since the M11x is small, and only use one HDD and no DVD or some sort, the other SATA 2 ports are likely never to be used on it.

Not sure why you think it will not work on notebooks. Should be the opposite. Desktops usually use more HDDs, DVDs, eSATA ports, etc.

Unless there is a backward compatibility problem, that you can't use a SATA 2 drive in a SATA 3 port. But I don't think so.

If you have any evidence to back this statement up, I'm sure many would like to see it. Otherwise, the "making things up" forums are that way ---->.

No evidence, but a strong indicator:

    Dell Alienware M11x Laptop: Intel Core i5 520UM (1.066 GHz) CPU, 8GB DDR3, 11.6" (1366x768) WLED LCD w/ Webcam, 320GB HD, WiFi N, 1GB GeForce GT 335M, Windows 7 $699 + Free shippin - Slickdeals.net

$699 R2 i5s? $320 off? That's a blowout. Makes me wonder if R3 or a new revision is indeed coming in March. I bought anyway. :)

I'm tempted to bite on that Alienware deal but I'm getting deployed in September and that Ideapad Y470 looks to be "the one" for me.

    Decisions, decisions...
