So I've gotten my shiny new R3, wiped and re-installed the OS with all the latest drivers, and I'm ready to start playing some games. Is there a way to verify (taskbar icon or some such?) that the nVidia card is engaged while I'm playing?

Yes. Go to the Nvidia Control Panel. Under the Desktop Menu (2 to the right of File Menu) click "Display GPU activity icon in Notification Area."
