Hey all, I'm supposedly having issues with my webcam. I noticed that the default setting is put to "FA Virtualcam," which seems to be giving me rainbow colored bars. However, if I change my settings to the integrated option, the webcam works again. Any ideas?

Does anyone have any suggestions?

The FA Virtualcam is related to the AlienSense automatic login feature. Just make the integrated webcam the default in your webcam programs.

Thanks for the reply Kevin, so is the FA Virtualcam program meant to give me no picture feed, or is my webcam faulty? What is Aliensense supposed to use as default? FA or the integrated one, since my Aliensense seems to be working fine?
Thanks for your answer! -
Fastaccess is the software behind the Aliensense login - I presume the FA virtualcam is just a device driver that allows access to the webcam prior to login (or something like that). It's one of those things you probably don't really need to worry about.
If your integrated webcam works, and aliensense login works, then it is working as intended. -
Ahh, thanks man for the re-assurance!

Actually, the FA Virtualcam (called FaCap) is a virtual camera CREATED by AlienSense. It's purpose is to allow OTHER video programs to have access to video when AlienSense is set to a mode - specifically either User Switching or Continuous Security - where AlienSense is using the integrated camera full time. In these modes, AlienSense is attached to the integrated camera, analyzes the video for faces, then passes the video to the virtual camera for further use.
AlienSense would never use the virtual camera because it's the program creating it and providing it with video from the integrated camera in the first place.
Note that when AlienSense is set to Face Login (or Disabled) mode, FaCap is (or should be) disabled.
So the central question is, what mode do you have AlienSense set to? If it's "Face Login", then you should not select FaCap in other video programs. It would not work. Select the integrated camera instead.
Most video programs will automatically select the "First Available" camera. If AlienSense is in Face Login mode, this should naturally be the integrated camera making video performance seemless and transparent. -
Yeah, I use Aliensense for facial recognition at startup. Once I login and start up an IM or Cyberlink e.g. An error saying "My webcam device is in use by another program" pops up and an image with rainbow bars come up instead. I can only get a proper picture once I go into the settings and change my camera from the virtual one to the integrated one. Is this normal?
Weird thing is that FA Virtual only sometimes appears in the drop down menu as default. At other times, it isn't even there. -
hey how well does the facial log in work?
-
Hey, well what do you mean? Picture clarity is good, loading times for Aliensense differs each time. Usually, it boots up quite fast, and the program recognizes me 89-90% of the time. However, it almost always screws up when others are beside me in the same room lol.
-
lol thanks. yeah i was wondering how accurate it was at logging you in by your face. +1
-
Oh lol, no worries, how's it working on yours?
-
i haven't gotten my r2 yet xD im stationed overseas in okinawa right now, i had my m11x shipped to my parents and my brother shipped it over to me i should be getting it in 1 or 2 days. just wanted to get a heads up on how the face thingy works lol
EDIT
i just got it today lol =] ill let you know how it works out for me -
Oh nice, you navy or marines? Take care out there!
-
marines, thanks =]

No worries man, hope the M11 can take the boredom out of your deployment(If there's any at all). Then again, it won't beat firing M4's all day :/

This may be normal depending on how the other video applications are programmed. Ones that are programmed well will be set by default to select the "first available" camera...which will automatically be the virtual camera when AlienSense is in User Switching or Continuous Security modes. If it's not programmed so well then you might need to take the manual step that you described.
Whether or not the virtual camera is available in a list of cameras may depend on what security mode you're in. It will be available in User Switching and Continuous Security modes but not in Disabled or Face Login modes.
I hope this helps. -
Well I'm always in Face login mode, with FAvirtual appearing in the drop down list only some of the time... What does this mean? I tested this in the pre-installed program Cyberlink Youcam and Skype, while MSN only showed the integrated cam, though I didn't use MSN much to test at all... Does this mean my webcam is broken/malfunctioning?
Thanks in advance! -
@juz follow ati
so far its 5/6 for me its a pretty cool program -
Yeah, it should be about there for everyone
. Hope you enjoy!

Your webcam is probably fine if you see video anywhere at all. It's certainly odd that the virtual camera (FaCap) would appear in a camera list sometimes and not other times if you're always in FaceLogin mode. The only thing that I can think of is that some programs may show it in the camera list even when it's disabled.
Regardless, if you're in Face Login mode you should be able to simply select the integrated camera everywhere and have things work as expected. For more details, definitely check out the FAQ online. There's a whole section of questions about the virtual camera.

I have a problem with my webcam. Picture position is very high.
When I look straight at the screen, I can only see my face from nose upward. I'm really disappointed
