Anyone have any suggestions or know of any deals for a new 256 meg SSD for the new R3?

    Does the R3 have a 6Gbps interface? I'd recommend OCZ Vertex 3....

The R3 supports SATA3, so there's really no point in getting a SATA2 drive when you can take advantage of the new interface.

Is there a link showing that it supports SATA 6GBPs? because I am VERY skeptical...

If it does, don't get some washed-up, has-been SSD like the OCZ Vertex 2. Get one that will actually use it.

    Crucial RealSSD C300, for example.

Not sure if the Vertex 3 is on the market yet...?

It has SandyBridge, therefore it supports it.

It also "supports" gigabit ethernet, but it doesn't have that :p

I wouldn't spend the extra money on a SATA 6GB SSD until somebody proves it with a benchmark. just sayin.

I think a SATA2 SSD will do fine.

I've been wondering this too, but unfortunately the m11x r3 does not have SATA 3 support. This is a chat session I just had with a sales rep. I'm going with a OCZ Vertex 2 for mine when it comes in. Good Luck guys.

04/22/2011 11:12:30PM Session Started with Agent (Sally B)
04/22/2011 11:12:36PM Agent (Sally B): "Welcome to Dell US Chat! My name is Sally B. and I will be your Dell.com Chat Expert. I can be reached at [email protected] or via voicemail at 1-800-379-3355 Ext-2160085. How can I help you today?"
    04/22/2011 11:12:38PM Agent (Sally B): "Hi Christian."
04/22/2011 11:13:16PM Christian Quitadamo: "I just have a quick question about the newly released m11x r3. Does it have SATA 3 connections for a SATA 3 hard drive?"
04/22/2011 11:13:55PM Agent (Sally B): "It's a pleasure to have you in my chat line today and I'll be more than happy to assist you with your concern."
04/22/2011 11:14:12PM Agent (Sally B): "It's not sata 3 year Christian. It is still sata 2.0"
04/22/2011 11:14:20PM Agent (Sally B): "Are you currently customizing this laptop online?"

The 128GB C300 is on sale at Newegg right now for $199. It's also on sale at Amazon for the same price. Now I'm tempted because I can use my American Express points at Amazon and get the ssd for a very low price.

Is there any word yet if the M11xR3 supports SATA3? It would be great if it is able to support 6GBPs. This would determine if I get the crucial C300 SSD(SATA 2) or the OCZ vertex 3 SSD(SATA 3).

Frankly I would not trust the Dell Rep as they are known to give unreliable info when it comes to specific technical questions like this. For all you know, when you ask them this question, most likely they would be thinking you are asking them the difference between USB 2 and 3.

Being Sandybridge support, I would say as mentioned it's 99% likely to support 6GBPs data. All Sandybridge chipsets are "supposed" to support SATA3 (but you never know). Plus it already does support USB 3.0 and Gigabit ethernet, 2 other Sandybridge differences from the R2 and R1.

Go with the Vertex 3, in a worst case situation... return it. No harm no foul.

Yeah, doesn't make sense why they would go through the trouble to disable SATA 6Gbps (SATA III) since the default chipset comes with six channels, two 6Gbps, four 3Gbps.

SATA3 drives are backwards compat: you just won't get the full 6gbps bandwidth.

Right, but no point in buying one of the newer drives if it's only as fast as current gen drives because it's capped by the SATA II (3Gbps) controller.

going by what notebookcheck.net says about the R3's motherboard as being a QS67 express and intel says it supports both SATA 2 and 3 but again it does not determine whether the R3 has SATA 3.

Right. I already posted that info in an earlier post. I guess if you're concerned wait until it's confirmed but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be supported. It's part of the chipset and can't imagine why Dell wouldn't make use of the SATA III, unless they used their own SATA controller, but not sure why they'd bother.

Anyone know how to check if the m11xR3 supports SATA3 short of actually buying a SATA3 SSD and installing it? The OCZ Vertex 3 is still not available in retail yet...all sites how at least a 2-3 week delivery date. If the m11xR3 only supports Sata2, than I would just get the c300 since that is readily available now.

Is there anyway to verify what the m11xR3 supports?

Well, I have ordered a Vertex2, the reason being that I doubt the faster one will be worth the 50% extra price tag. :|

But I have never owned a SSD yet, but my NAS is with 2xHDDs so they proberly end up setting the bottleneck anyway.. or the ethernet between :)

IF the m11x R3 has 6GBPS then it is VERY VERY worth the extra 50% price.

This is a Crucial RealSSD C300 128GB SSD. It's wonderful. The new SSDs that are just coming out are even faster.

I think OCZ Vertex 3 is the best, according to Hardware Heaven.
