I use AVG, Advanced system care pro, Malwarebytes and Spybot S&D. I know its an over kill but each program has its strengths which are awesome (AVG is good at preventing, system care pro is good at maintaining, so I wouldn't say this would be included as an anti-virus but anyway, Malwarebytes is good at scanning for virus' and Spybot protects my registry.) and I'm sick of crappy spyware, it's the biggest annoyance in the World.
So what do you use people?
-
i use nod32. i was using mcafee because i get it for "free" from the university i attend but mcafee used a lot more ram than nod32
-
I've tried Norton Antivirus, McAfee antivirus, Trend Micro, Panda Cloud, AVG, and Avast!. Out of those, I use Avast on all of my machines. It's free, it gives what I feel to be a great level of protection against trojans / malware when visiting some "questionable" websites, and it's unobtrusive. It just runs, gets out of the way.
-
I currently use Microsoft Security Essentials
-
But Microsoft Security Essentials seems to be an exception. It works pretty well. -
So MSE takes care of spyware/malware and viruses.
Leave Windows Firewall on for a firewall.
this is all free too!
I'm one of those guys that doesn't mind paying for internet security suites, but recently learning this knowledge, I've realized not everything is better because you pay for it.
goodluck :] -
One added benefit to Microsoft Security Essentials besides being free and working well is the simple fact that it is NOT a resource hog like the other antivirus programs. It works seamlessly and unobtrusively with the system to do its job. I absolutely hate how Mcafee and Norton take over the system!
-
Microsoft Security Essentials FTW!
Love it!!!
-
Bitdefender total security 2010.
It is very good and it has a gaming mode. -
Microsoft Security Essentials with Malwarebytes as a backup scanner.
-
Microsoft Security Essentials, does the job and doesn't hog resources
.
-
Another vote for Microsoft Security Essentials - the only AV program I've ever used that I can't even tell is running. Totally unobtrusive.
-
None, thats just how I roll.
The only computer I have that runs virus scan is my WHS. -
MS Essentials & AdMuncher
-
I've been using Panda Cloud Antivirus for a month or two now on my m11x and m15x.
By far the best, it's free, and even on my Dad's Windows XP Celeron 2.4 GHz desktop, does not take any resource usage. -
Look up mrizos channel on youtube, hes a computer technician that tests every AV out there to subject tests by actually putting malicious content against every AV out there, including 0-day content. A couple of his videos will give you a great understanding of how they work in the first place and the use of a sandbox can make you pretty much immune to anything browser related, not sure if they have one for 64 bit yet that runs 100% consistant w/o crashing.
I'm currenty using Kaspersky on my older laptop, sandboxy works great on its 32 bit os and you can block any application from running thats new to the system which is the wall to end all unwanted apps if something happens to get past the hueristic scanner. -
It was nice that it didn't take up resources, but I felt that a more traditional signature-based antivirus program would work out better for me. -
Avast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Arrr, matey.
-
lol none. I use nonscript on firefox to prevent 99% of all internet viruses. I try my best to not download suspicious files
I have been doing that for 2 years now. So far so good!
-
Dangerous.
It's like saying that you don't use condoms, because you're careful of the girls you date. -
BTW:
I have seen that many of you use microsoft security essentials. Do you know of any good online review of it? -
another vote on MSE as well
-
I reccommend Norton 360 (2010)(This is the antivirus im actually using on this machine), it has work very well
.
The only one I would say you may NEVER use is McAfee, is the worst antivirus ever... -
Bringing this back from the dead...
Im currently using bitdefender total security 2011.. its great on my desktop, but seems too cpu demanding on my m11xr2..
Is it recommended i disabled all AV software(bitdefender, windows firewall/defender) and just be cautious to what i browse/download?
Any other recommended security software? why? -
-
As for disabling software and just being careful... that is like saying that you are going tonever use condoms, and just be careful of the girls you date. Terrible terrible idea. Even if you visit only reputable sites, you are still susceptible to attacks that malware authors inject into ads. The ads on legitimate sites are often hosted by 3rd party servers, where the website owner has no access into the code used for the ads.
Just in the past month, I have received two trojan injection attempts from cnn.com and cnet.com through this type of attack. If I had gone without malware protection and just stuck to sites that were reputable as my only form of protection, my computer would be part of a botnet right now. The only way I caught it was because I was running Avast. -
-
I'm not saying that turning off Javascript would be useless to protect you. What I am saying is that turning off Javascript and relying on that as the sole method of protection wouldn't be enough. -
MSE, I use it in all my computers, never have a problem so far...
-
Blocking said ads is also a huge deterrent. FP + NoScript + Adblock (or equivalent counterparts of each of these).
nod32 here. -
+1 to kent
I like protection so I wear three condoms and she's on the pill aka I use avast mcfee mse and iobit security. Mcaffe is used for hardly anything XD. Mse and avast scan and protect while iobit is used to do stuff can't remember what it does on my droid in the car and im driving XD jk I ain't driving. Btw did I mention I also use windows firewall it's my computers "backup plan" XD
-
Nod 32 + MSE on M11x
Avast + MSE on XPS M1530 -
How does bitdefender stack up with MSE/NOD/avast?
-
I really like MSE - at work we use ESET Nod32 which is fantastic as well.
-
Why on earth are you running multiple AV? -
Microsoft Security Essentials= free
-
-
Avast!, Malwarebytes, and Spybot SnD. CCleaner and Revo Uninstaller are great maintenance programs too. I would use NOD32 but it's not free and it did work great on my older computers years ago.
Stay away from AVG and Norton (the home versions as I hear the enterprise ones are much better).
-
I paid for Nod 32 and Avast Pro but since MSE was free, I thought I would use it too. -
I use Avast on all of my and all of my family's computers. -
Yes. Two AV engines can cause systems to lock up at worst and prevent one another from working at best.
-
-
-
Wow, 3 replies!!!
Hmmm, I'm on alot of torrent sites though so can't be too careful.
I'll probably uninstall MSE. -
Avast - loaded it on first boot up, I can't measure any real difference in gaming with it enabled or not, so I'm pleased.
Outside of that, being careful with what you do makes a big difference..!
EDIT: Just added the free version of MalwareBytes Anti-Malware software -
Kaspersky Internet Security Suite 2011
-
Currently I'm using ZoneAlarm Internet Security free for 30 days, LOL!
But after the trial period I might use MSE + ZoneAlarm free firewall...... Free and Easy to use -
Right now I'm using Kaspersky 2010. It's really good. I mean it!!
-
I had AVG for years but moved to MSE with the M11X. It's much better and uses less resources.
AVG used to be the best but over the years it seems to have got more resources hungry.
MSE does do real time protection.
What anti-virus programs do you use for your m11x?
