What anti-virus programs do you use for your m11x?

I use AVG, Advanced system care pro, Malwarebytes and Spybot S&D. I know its an over kill but each program has its strengths which are awesome (AVG is good at preventing, system care pro is good at maintaining, so I wouldn't say this would be included as an anti-virus but anyway, Malwarebytes is good at scanning for virus' and Spybot protects my registry.) and I'm sick of crappy spyware, it's the biggest annoyance in the World.

So what do you use people?

I've tried Norton Antivirus, McAfee antivirus, Trend Micro, Panda Cloud, AVG, and Avast!. Out of those, I use Avast on all of my machines. It's free, it gives what I feel to be a great level of protection against trojans / malware when visiting some "questionable" websites, and it's unobtrusive. It just runs, gets out of the way.

That is also an excellent program. I usually try to avoid aftermarket programs from Microsoft, because I think most of them are bloated pieces of garbage trying to get you to use Windows Genuine Advantage or whatever crap search engine, DRM, or Xbox Live tie-in they are trying to con you into using.

But Microsoft Security Essentials seems to be an exception. It works pretty well.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials. There was a post earlier on the forums where this guy posted a monthly antivirus report from a 3rd party company. Microsoft Security Essentials received the highest detection rate and the lowest false positives.

So MSE takes care of spyware/malware and viruses.
Leave Windows Firewall on for a firewall.

    this is all free too!

I'm one of those guys that doesn't mind paying for internet security suites, but recently learning this knowledge, I've realized not everything is better because you pay for it.

    goodluck :]

One added benefit to Microsoft Security Essentials besides being free and working well is the simple fact that it is NOT a resource hog like the other antivirus programs. It works seamlessly and unobtrusively with the system to do its job. I absolutely hate how Mcafee and Norton take over the system!

I've been using Panda Cloud Antivirus for a month or two now on my m11x and m15x.

By far the best, it's free, and even on my Dad's Windows XP Celeron 2.4 GHz desktop, does not take any resource usage.

Look up mrizos channel on youtube, hes a computer technician that tests every AV out there to subject tests by actually putting malicious content against every AV out there, including 0-day content. A couple of his videos will give you a great understanding of how they work in the first place and the use of a sandbox can make you pretty much immune to anything browser related, not sure if they have one for 64 bit yet that runs 100% consistant w/o crashing.

I'm currenty using Kaspersky on my older laptop, sandboxy works great on its 32 bit os and you can block any application from running thats new to the system which is the wall to end all unwanted apps if something happens to get past the hueristic scanner.

I've used Panda Cloud for a few months, but didn't really like it. My main gripe with it was that I didn't feel like it gave great protection when you weren't connected to the internet. That wasn't an issue for my main desktop PC, but it was definitely a drawback on my laptops when I was on the road.

It was nice that it didn't take up resources, but I felt that a more traditional signature-based antivirus program would work out better for me.

Bringing this back from the dead...

Im currently using bitdefender total security 2011.. its great on my desktop, but seems too cpu demanding on my m11xr2..

Is it recommended i disabled all AV software(bitdefender, windows firewall/defender) and just be cautious to what i browse/download?

Any other recommended security software? why?

The two best free antivirus / security suites are Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials. Despite what you might think about previous Microsoft products being useless bloatware, MSE is actually very good. Either one will give you pretty good antivirus and malware protection without being a resource hog.

As for disabling software and just being careful... that is like saying that you are going tonever use condoms, and just be careful of the girls you date. Terrible terrible idea. Even if you visit only reputable sites, you are still susceptible to attacks that malware authors inject into ads. The ads on legitimate sites are often hosted by 3rd party servers, where the website owner has no access into the code used for the ads.

Just in the past month, I have received two trojan injection attempts from cnn.com and cnet.com through this type of attack. If I had gone without malware protection and just stuck to sites that were reputable as my only form of protection, my computer would be part of a botnet right now. The only way I caught it was because I was running Avast.

Actually he's right. Turning off Javascript in your browser is probably the single most effective thing you can do nowadays to prevent crap like "Antivirus 2010 has detected the following vulnerabilities! Click here to fix your system!"

Malware attacks these days go after vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash and Adobe Acrobat Reader. Turning off Javascript will not protect you against these kinds of attack. And if you were to disable Flash, you would arguably break 75% of the websites out there.

I'm not saying that turning off Javascript would be useless to protect you. What I am saying is that turning off Javascript and relying on that as the sole method of protection wouldn't be enough.

Avast!, Malwarebytes, and Spybot SnD. CCleaner and Revo Uninstaller are great maintenance programs too. I would use NOD32 but it's not free and it did work great on my older computers years ago.

Stay away from AVG and Norton (the home versions as I hear the enterprise ones are much better).

As far as I know, MSE is not an active scanner, right?

Is there any negative effects on doing this? Just thought if one program didn't catch a virus/trojan, then hopefully the other one would. Is it going overboard?

I paid for Nod 32 and Avast Pro but since MSE was free, I thought I would use it too.

The short answer is yes, there are negative effects. Depending on the combination, significant conflicts can arise, actually leaving you more vulnerable. Not to mention it wastes resources.

I use Avast on all of my and all of my family's computers.

The negative effect is that it drains system resources. Every single file you open or save/download needs to get scanned twice. That's twice the amount of CPU cycles being used, twice the amount of RAM being used to run two anti-virus programs, and twice the amount of disk access needed to scan a file.

Avast - loaded it on first boot up, I can't measure any real difference in gaming with it enabled or not, so I'm pleased.

Outside of that, being careful with what you do makes a big difference..!

I had AVG for years but moved to MSE with the M11X. It's much better and uses less resources.

AVG used to be the best but over the years it seems to have got more resources hungry.

MSE does do real time protection.
