The wireless card that came stock with the m11x seems a little slow. Is there anything faster out there? I would prefer to use the PCI Express slot that is half height and keep the other free.

    Get the 6300.

Best wireless card I have used to date.

But don't buy it at that price.

Ask babyhemi as he had them for like $34 I think.

also intel wifi link 5300 n is GREAT. i dont see any REAL diff between the 6300 and 5300. i think intel might have made minor difference and release it for profit. i have had them for the alienwares, and it is SICK

Keep in mind that the wifi card in the M11x is a 2x2 card. The Wifi Link 5300 and 6300 are both 3x3 cards. You would need to buy another antenna and figure out how to actually route it in order to get full bandwidth from it.

Yeah, while you can use the 6300 in 2x2 mode, too, the Intel 5100/5200/6200 are cheaper, and are 2x2 cards.

The 6200 is indeed an improvement over the stock dell wifi card. I got mine a few months back and haven't had any issues and get 300mbps consistently on my wireless-n network

Just upgraded to a 6200, no problems with installation or drivers. Getting 270 Mbps with my N-Network. Completely worth it for 17 dollars.

Im thinking about getting intel Wifi Link 6200, but I've never dealt with installing these in such a tight built notebook. Any step by step instructions I can use as reference?

Is it simple take out old wifi card and replace with new one?

    Any feedback is appreciated.

Also, any concerns with any of the 6200 cards on sale on ebay?
    Thank you again

Extremely simple, the whole process requires the removal of the back panel and one extra screw.

    Step-By-Step:

    Pre-Setup:
Uninstall Dell 1520 drivers by going to Add/Remove Programs and removing Dell AW1520 program.

    1) Turn the laptop off completely
    2) Remove the back panel by undoing the 6-7 screws on the back panel
    3) Identify the WiFi card, it is located near the HDD on the bottom left of the notebook with the top being the back of the notebook. Once it is identified undo 2 antenna cables by gently pulling them out from the card using your fingers or a small screwdriver (Be careful not to damage the cables or the original card.
    4) Undo 1 screw holding the card in place, as you undo the screw the card will lift. Take the card out from the slot.
    5) Insert new card into the slot, screw in using the original screw. Attach two antenna cables.
    6) Boot up without reattaching the back-panel to make sure everything is OK, once it is attach the back panel to the laptop.
    7) Find Intel 6200 drivers and install! =)

3x3 benefit. 6300 also works in 2x2 mode.

    6200 is 6300 with only 2x2 funtionality...

How much better is the 6200 vs 1520?

How hard is it to mod antenna for 6300 in M11x?

    Big difference in 6300 vs 6200 ?

Where can I get the 6200 cheep :)?

    Thanks!

You will only benefit from 6300's 3x3 MIMO if your router actually supports 3 spatial streams.

Nope only intel 6250, 5350 and 5150 cards have wimax.

The 6200 will do the job just fine, but if you have a 3x3 router and wanna take advantage of the 6300's full potential then go ahead.

Is also 3x3. I got mine at Frys for ~$100. They support DD-wrt as well which is a tweaker's dream. I haven't flashed mine over yet though. It also supports gigabit lan.

    ok..

Hm just to make everything simpler, A wifi card must be good at 2 essential things(well for me atleast) The Range, then the connection. The 1520 has a very bad wifi range, thus will never get the full potential of anything, the 6200 Has longer range, connectivity, and etc. Essentially 2~3x better then the 1520. However Simply because a card says 300mps, does not Mean you will get 300mps, thats similar to HDDs, just because it says 80gb doesn't mean you get to use the 80gb. Speed also is affected by static interference, range, router, modem and etc.

As for the 6200 vs 6300. The Alienware notebook supports 2x2, not 3x3 so if you get the 6300 essentially you'll get the same performance as the 6200, unless you add on a 3x3.

What is your routers security mode set to? It has to be WPA2-AES, set to 40mhz wide band and wireless mode to N only. Your throughput will be knocked down severely if you dont.

The reality is, you wont hit anywhere near 300mbps because of overhead, range and other factors. The 300mbps shown in windows is just the link rate, which is the maximum allowable rate.

The maximum throughput on a typical N connection on 2 wide band streams is about 100mbps~ (12.5MB/s) on 3 streams its about 140mbps~ (17.5MB/s)

Depending on the chipset of the router, even the overhead of encryption will cut in to your goodput. I'm not sure why it's so crucial to get 300mbps from the router anyhow. Unless you're at school with a t carrier line, or you just love to spend money on enterprise internet connections at home.

Some people like me need as much wireless bandwidth not just for internet but also for LAN. (eg. Transferring files to my NAS). It would be a better to use wired ethernet but thats not an option from where my desktop sits.

I understand entirely, that's why i'm running gig lan and wireless n. But the bottleneck is still going to be the hardware on either side.

I have a Dell Studio XPS 16 and have had nothing but major problems with my Intel 5300 dropping connections (with certain networks). I have done about everything that you can think of and nothing seems to work (yet my other 2 computers and other people's computers do not have any problems with the routers/networks that I have problems with on my XPS). It seems like there are a lot of people who have had similar issues with the 5300 and especially with Linksys and Belkin routers (including me with both of them). I tried to get Dell to replace it with a 6300 but they refused (they are sending a tech with a Dell 1520 in a couple of days). I have heard nothing but good things about the 6300 and highly recommend that anyone trying to choose which one to get to take it over the 5300, the Dell 1520, etc. This is because having Internet/Wifi network connection problems can be a huge pain so might as well avoid it and get the best equipment (and connection) possible especially when the price differences are so small. This is especially true if you are using your system for online gaming whether it be poker like me (and having network/Internet problems can cost you real $$$) or WOW or whatever. If the 1520 doesn't work properly, then I am definitely picking up a 6300 (and might regardless of problems). I might just have a bad card but I think shooting for the best one especially if there is not a huge price difference is a good move.

I installed a Intel 6300 in my M11X R1, and Asus G73. My M17x, and G73 both with Intel 6300's connect at 300mps, my M11X connects at 150mps? I put the first setting to Auto instead og 20mhz only, that usually works. One of the antenna wires came off the connector on the M11X, I put it back in the connector, I do not know if that is the reason. I am planning on putting a third attenna in the G73, and M11X. The G73 only has two antennas connected at this time, and connects at 300mps. Any ideas?

Simple, if you want a better wifi card, get the Intel WiFi 6200, its cheap and works as it should. It has two antennas, the 6300 has three, if you go with the 6300, to see any benifets, you need to buy a extra wifi antenna, and find a place to hide it in your laptop.

I sent my M11X off to the depot today. They will replace my LCD to fix a broken wifi wire. I put both a 6200, and a 6300 in with no diffrence, both connected at 150mbs, other laptops in y house with 6300's connect at 300mbs. I figure the wire is the cuase, I connected the wire back in the connector on the wifi card, no change. I guess we will see.

Not quite sure where to put this, but since I replaced the Wireless card I have no use for the dell utility, but I can't seem to uninstall it, I keep getting the error shown in my attachment, is there anyway I can get rid of the utility?

The 6200 is good. HOWEVER, for some reason the later drivers freeze up. Its something to do with the compatibility between the GPU and the card. I had a thread up before and several people had the same issues. Requires tweaking. I returned mine because it was too much hassle.
