So, I can't find a stable build at all, whether overclocking my cpu or now even overclocking the video, and was wondering what you're using?

Here's the format for this topic:
1: What CPU do you have?
    2: What nVidia driver?
3: What Program are you using to OC?
4: What speeds do you find stable?

Which version of m11x are you using? R1 or R2?

I have not OC'ed mine at all, but will be keeping an active study of this thread until I decide to OC mine. :)

Judging by his sig I'm going with R2, however, both M11x's use the same GPU. the key to GPU overclocking is keeping it cool. the more you can keep it cool, the more stable it will be. I was able to bench mine with GPU clocks over 630MHz on the core. Not sure the exact settings, but ehy are in my sig. It wasn't stable for gaming. Other then benching, I don't overclock much. Infact, I havn't taken my M11x of "save power" mode oin months. Been a while since I used the 335M.

I found mine was stable (no long tests) with light OCing, not that it did much for performance but got crashes in games. So I am going back to stock which gave me the best 3dMark06, and I'm being happy with that.

    less messing more using :)

Erm, I don't think he(the OP) is asking based on the R2 even though its an R2 on his sig. I think he returned it as he posted previously stating that he did not like his R2, and prefered his R1. He even did a pretty long review write up about it here:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m11x/499197-dj-josh-review-m11x-r1-vs-r2.html

I would be surprised if he was still hanging on to it.

    Updated:

Just saw a post he made today.

Guess afterall he decided to keep it. Strange after that long thread beating the R2 down.

No problems here . OC to 1.73ghz. Using the Alienware drivers from the DL site for the Nvidia 335 .

I'm curious to know how long people are able to game while they have there GPU overclocked to the settings stated they use for gaming. Are these like 3 hour sittings?

I've used steven's settings. Played borderlands for 3 hours straight. Temp stayed in the 60's, laptop stayed cool.

I tried those settings and Dragon Age almost performed worse and Crysis benchmark was better. But the gains didn't really add up to much.

Those settings helped me a bit with Sniper Ghost Warrior and Bad Company 2, but you're right, no drastic difference.

    Hey, just asking.

I wonder whether the overclocked GT 335M (even just the gpu chip @ 550Mhz which is still 100Mhz more than standard) is faster than the standard ATI 5650.

Because standard vs. standard clock, the 5650 is faster than the GT335M.

    my settings for R1 are:

    Settings - gpu 580, shader 1400, mem 870
    OC to 1.73ghz

have played MW2 and BFBC2 for way more than 3 hours with no problem.
Completely stable. Temps reach between 50C-56C, but this was from random temp checking, not a constant analysis.
I had drastic lower temps with elevating the M11x to allow higher air intake to GPU/CPU.

More importantly, how much is the real gain in gaming?

I mean from 450Mhz to 550MHz chip core is a plus of over 20% and many here have overclocked even shader and memory frequency.

Have any of you benched some games before and after instead of 3DMark?

Can you atleast expect a fps-gainage of more than 10% ?

Yes, it's possible with my M11x R1. I have my GPU overclocked to 545/810 which is ~20% increase in clockspeed for the core. These are my 24/7 clocks and are completely stable. The memory doesn't do very well though :/.
Here are some quick runs of Far Cry 2 @ Ultra settings DX10 1366x768.
    Stock + CPU @ 1.6Ghz:

    GPU OC + CPU @ 1.6Ghz:
While the benchmark shows ~20% increase in, the problem with this benchmark (Ranch Short) is that it stresses the CPU alot with physics calculations. However we can still see a gain in FPS even with a GPU OC.

sorry to threadjack a bit, but I can't seem to find the location in Nvidia control panel to allow adjustment of clock speeds. I have the latest control panel 3.3.532.01 from the hacked update released a few weeks ago, or is everyone using another 3rd party program to adjust clock speeds on the graphics processor.

Most/some are using EVGA Precision to OC the GPU (I use this myself). You could also use the NVIDIA utility which you have to download seperately (not used myself but this sort of thing NVIDIA System Tools)

Install Nvidia System Tools, then install the "Performance" aspect of the installer. Then you will be able to OC the 335M in the control panel. It will be on the right under "Device Settings"

I use 550-1320-870 and it is pretty stable.

For anyone concerned about heat issues: I personally prop up the front of the laptop with something approximately 16x5x3 mm³ (currently a giant eraser with a plastic cover on it bought for me as a joke) to elevate the laptop and help it get more air while gaming, which can reduce the temperate by 5-10 degrees Celsius.

If you're worried about the temperature of your GPU/laptop, I HIGHLY recommend doing something like this, that way you don't have to worry about GPU OC's cooking your system (at least with heat, don't jack up the OC settings -- it won't work). Even if you don't OC, I think it's still a good idea. A cool laptop is a happy laptop.
