The one that ships sandwiched between the KB and the screen.

IS it really necessary or am I just geeking out here?

The screen cloth protects the screen during shipping, but the keyboard tends to scratch the screen anyway. You can get a screen protector and dump the cloth.

Still got mine. Used it for a month or two, then bought a Kabuto to use in its place. The Kabuto is too thick so I stopped using anything for about 4 months. Two months of going commando is all it took for permanent scratched to start to develop on the plastic screen. I waited for the the promised announcement that Dell would be doing something about the hinge issue, but after waiting for months I caved and had them replace the entire LCD assembly. Days later they announced the new LCD lid design.

Now I'm sporting a ScreenSavr from Radtech. It's as thin a solution as you'll find, is very durable and makes an excellent cleaning cloth.

I kept mine. No way I'm letting my screen touch my keyboard unprotected.

    I kept mine.

I only took the protective strip off the on/off button strip a few months ago.
That was a VERY exciting moment...sooo shiny!!! hhhmmm.

The cloth does stop the rivers of lava flowing down the screen (God bless/help that poster).

It is tempting to take a cotton swab of the muck on the screen and culture it in a petri dish.

May not have to go to locker C18 at Grand Central Station to have my own little army of devotees. :D

I've had my m11x for about six months now and I still use that cloth every time I close the lid. Works wonders.

"Lava," that still kills me! :p

I bought one of these (thin mousepad)

Cooler Master Choiix Tri-Functional TravelPad Inlcudes Mouse Pad, Screen Protector and Laptop Duster
Amazon.com: Cooler Master Choiix Tri-Functional TravelPad Inlcudes Mouse Pad, Screen Protector and Laptop Duster: Electronics
    [IMG]
$5.99 & eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping on orders over $25.

Its great, protects the screen and can be used as a mousepad. Could be a little bigger but no other complaints. Also I don't use it for the mousepad (haven't needed to yet) - just for the screen protector.

So, basically a Razer Kabuto laptop mousepad / screen protector, minus the Razer logo and $14 cheaper.

Still use mine, family likes to poke fun at me, but it drove me crazy when I'd have to constantly clean the screen, and the possibility of scratching worries me.

No, it doesn't cover the whole screen (I wish it was a tad wider). The screen closes easily, there is just enough of a gap that the keys dont touch the screen anywhere (as far as I can tell anyhow).

I noticed quite a few cloths don't cover the entire board or screen. No big deal as it's thick enough that there's no way it can hit the keys.

Same here! I've found myself without the screen cloth a few times, but I always use the velvet "case"

Looks like I'll make sure I use the screen cloth from now on 100% I don't want my screen all scratched up

I've had mine for 3+ months now, not a single scratch or wear mark.

I have forgotten to use it maybe 3 times, and kicked myself every time.

I'm thinking about cutting and restitching the Alienware velvet sleeve to trade out the keyboard cover.

Used the cloth until I got my ScreenSavrz, custom cut to 28 x 19.5 cm. Works well and have also used it to wipe fingerprints off the screen.

Can someone give the history for this issue.
Is this something that happens to the R2 ?

I just got my i7 and do not remember any screen cover.
I do use the cloth that covers everything.

How about a Bounty paper towel ?

On most M11x's the keys will come into contact with the cheesy plastic screen. Especially when it's bagged and the lid gets compressed by other objects. Over time this can lead to permanent scratches unless you take steps to prevent it.
