I'm thinking of swapping out my motherboard and bottom chassis and keeping the screen assembly and IO board but will it work?

It will not work. They have different pin configuration. You cannot also replace the bottom chasis unles you replace the upper chasis/palmrest. Screw locations on chasis are not the same between R1 and R2. Keyboard layout as well.
