I turn on my m11x r2, the fan starts, keyboard lights turn on, and it turns off. Screen displays nothing. I have eliminated ram(unless both sticks went bad at the same time), hard drive, and battery as not being a problem. No apparent issues when I last used it.

It used to overheat and shutdown when watching videos, more so when connected to my tv. Stopped happening after I cleaned the vents and got a cooler and did not happen again in the past 6 months. I also notice that the blue ring on the tip of my charger turns on and off when I bend the wire.

I am leaning towards needing a new motherboard but want to make sure before I purchase one.

That sounds to me like either a power supply problem or a bad CPU (it doesn't start or display anything about POST, beeps, etc.). I'd try opening it up again and cleaning it out with compressed air from under the keyboard (take it off) through the bottom and back vents. (My power cord also goes from no light to light depending on how it's bent, so I'm hoping that wouldn't cause any problem for you either.) Unless you can find a DC power supply with exactly the same wattage, amperes, and size to test as well, I'd probably assume that something horrid has happened to your CPU at some point. Hopefully cleaning and/or seeing what damage excessive dust could've done might point to a more pronounced problem (Haven't cleaned it out again for 6 months? I try to clean it more than once a month) So yes, you might need a new motherboard if nothing else can be helped.

Is it possible to buy an r2 motherboard like that and swap it into an R1 or are the chasis different enough that it will not work?
