I came across a BIOS update that I would like to install, but I want to keep my current BIOS settings (particularly the overclock), which I won't be able to change again afterwards because I forgot my BIOS password. Is it safe to update?

    1) BIOS updates typically do not destroy BIOS settings. That doesn't mean "always", but you should be ok.

    2) You should really look into recovering / resetting the BIOS. A password on your BIOS is a problem. I'd recommend you fix it now while you have the time. Because when you actually need the BIOS password, you won't have the time to do it.

I actually posted a thread about recovering it, and then quickly learned about "no discussing bypassing security" rule. :p I can live with it the way it is, but I'd like to keep it updated if possible. If another person or two can confirm that they haven't lost their settings after updating, I'll just go ahead and do it.

I did the A05 update on my BIOS earlier this week with no issues. All the setting remained - at least as far as I can tell. Overclock at least.

If you've registered the laptop with Dell, you may be able to call Support, give them your Service Tag, and ask for assistance resetting the BIOS password. It's at least worth a shot.

    Short of that, Google.

Would one more person confirm this for me? It would make me feel a lot more comfortable; thanks in advance!
