Is windows 7 ultimate faster than the stock home premium of the m11x? If so then this would be my excuse to do a fresh install :D and also should I install Service Pack 1 for better performance / power?

I do not see how there could be any difference in performance between Home Premium and Ultimate if they were configured the same as far as applications and services running.

Ultimate could be configured to run slower than Home Premium if you installed XP mode and ran some apps there. All of the other differences would not impact performance any.

See what the differences are here:

    Compare Windows - Microsoft Windows

Bitlocker, add to a domain, language support, XP Mode, different backup options. That's about it.

If you already have windows ultimate and dont mind doing a fresh install, then you may as well install it, however, i doubt you would notice any sort of perfomance or power difference between the two.

as far as i know SP1 just improves security, with a fix for touch screens and tablets.

after a bit of searching i found this,

Here are the most notable changes in SP1:

    * A bug fix for HDMI audio devices that stopped working after restarting the computer

    * Corrected behavior when printing mixed-orientation XPS documents

    * Changed behavior of the "Restore previous folders at logon" functionality so that all folders are restored to their previous position, rather than in cascading order based on the most recently active folders.

The service pack also includes all previously released security, stability and performance updates for Windows 7.

Get Windows 7 Professional. Only good thing about ultimate is it can support 192+ RAM (Huge bullcrap, who needs 192+ Gigs of RAM!?). Home premium isn't so different, except it doesn't have some advanced features that Professional and Ultimate have. All versions of W7 have the same speed, well, ultimate does have a lot of useless junk on it. It would be sad if Ultimate was faster, because micro$oft did that on purpose. Get professional. Best deal, and best bang for your buck.
