Yes it will work.
Depending on what harddrive you have will determine how much it helps.
Here is a big thread about the harddrive and how good/bad it is.

I thought about it myself but was turned off by the negative reviews, I am thinking about getting an 80gig Intel SSD (about 200 bucks) and using an external to hold anything I can't/don't have on the internal. Run a few games on the HD and have the rest backed up on the external, if you want to play one just reinstall it from the backup. I am running a 500gb in an external enclosure that requires no power connection other than USB which is nice to bring with you.

I've got one in mine. First one I got had a huge problem with vibration. I returned it and this second one was doing the same thing to a lesser degree. Day and a half later and it has actually subsided to a level I can deal with. I'd say it's about average for a 7200rpm drive.
As far as performance goes... I gotta say I'm not seeing a huge performance boost in any particular area. Boot time improvement isn't what I'd call stark in comparison to the stock 5400rpm drive I had, although I didn't time it with the stock drive. In the course of a typical work day I've got Outlook, a dozen tabs open in FF, tons of RDP sessions, Photoshop CS5, Lightroom, Nikon CaptureNX, Dreamweaver, Acrobat Standard, Word, Excel, and a handful of less frequent applications running. I don't know if the 4GB isn't enough to handle all of that or if I'm just not sensitive enough to the speed increase it's supposed to deliver.
Anyway that's my take on it after two days. I'm just glad the intense vibration isn't a problem anymore. That first drive would make my hands numb after 5 minutes of continuous typing. A few others reported the same issue on Newegg, so it's possible that there's a small percentage of defective drives.
Would this work?
