I needed XP and went with VMWare Player.

But if you need the native experience, I looked into it once and gave up before I started. I seem to remember people telling me about all sorts of missing drivers.

But I ran into a similar issue to yours (at least I think it was similar) back when I was doing hackintoshes. Have you tried AHCI mode in the BIOS? Does it even have AHCI mode in the BIOS?

Anyways, I found the thread that changed my mind. Here it is.

The thread has no pointers to the actual error i am facing, which is even before the installing drivers part

Why would you run XP on such a nice machine?

Some people "still" consider XP to be the better system for gaming on :) however with the M11x R3 l think windows 7 has the advantage especially as it is a 64 bit platform with a matured OS for gaming/system/programme.

I found virtually no diference between XP and W7 on my HP 311c wrt speed, W7 was actually better wrt when using a 4GB SD card of caching  l suppose the ion GC helped a little

Personnally l hatted Vista and stayed with XP for as long as possible, when W7 turned up l jumped at the chance, gaming on W7 with all my systems is no real drama :D

However the OP may just have a spare copy of XP lying about and wants to use it

XP doesn't support DX10 does it? So how can it be a better gaming choice?

Plus officially there aren't any XP drivers for the M11x.

Aye XP only supports DX9.0 and below

However l did find during the transition to W7 that some games refused to play ie panzer general etc games of that era

I think given time the OP will eventually give up. If he really wants pain, install linux and use wine :D

PS nice spec on your M18x :)

i really need XP for work purpose and i dont need any gaming. the reason i bought alienware is that this is the only one 11" dell is offering with 2 speckers and dedicated gfx card.

my company is gonna screw me if they find out that this notebook can't use XP. so anyone? any tips. i've gone extreme and removed a stick of RAM, hard disk and ran the install bare bones to see if it could get pass and it still shoots the bsod error. so the hard disk culprit is out

im 99% sure i needed to chance the AHCI mode setting in the bios to get Xp to install on my R1.

cant remember for sure right now tho...

i think there were a few drivers that didnt pan out 100%. the video was a big one for me cuz i couldnt use the switchable gfx (which IMO makes the M11x just another laptop). thats what pretty much threw me back to W7 personally but i know what its like to have Xp machines around. i do IT for my office and having Xp can mean the difference between needing a $20k software upgrade or not....

Is Optimus supported under any XP driver? Without Optimus support the NVIDIA card is pretty useless.

Reskin it to an XP theme if all you need to worry about is boss looking over the shoulder!

Revisit virtual systems or XP mode? Install and use Windows XP Mode in Windows 7

    a) you should have checked in advance
    b) company should know that they cannot assume to run XP on the most recent systems, if they are sure then a whitelist of approved systems should be provided - not the other way around.
