AU and NZ had the i3 version for sale before it was removed from the site leaving only the i5 and i7 versions.

The Core I series, in and of itself, has more efficient architecture and will net slightly better performance than C2D. That said, don't get your hopes up. The i3 will outpace the C2D I'm guessing, but it isn't going to blow your socks off.

the i3 is from the R2 line. so....

    R1 is only 2 x C2D

    R2 is only i3, i5, i7 but then went to i5 and i7

    R3 is only i5 and i7

yes i have, and a recomendation, don't buy it, it's a little small for actual games.
And it doesn't have turbo boost

I bought, one. I can't compare it with others performance-wise, but its run really well for me. I don't run the most demanding games though. League of Legends, Starcraft 2, Team Fortress 2, and Supreme Commander 2 mostly. I've gotten it overclocked to 1719Mhz according to CPU-Z with setpll. This is without much testing, I could probably get it higher by raising voltage or something, but I don't really need it higher.

I'd say go for the better one, if you can, unless you don't need the power. If you get the cheaper one, you'll always wish you had that extra power. However I'm glad with my purchase. This is going to be my college laptop. Battery, and price were higher priorities than games. I already have a desktop for games, and I couldn't justify 1000$ (I barely could justify 700$) on a gaming laptop for college when I could've gotten a cheaper one and gamed on my desktop.

Have you checked the Dell Refurbish?!
I just got the refurbish R3 with I5 & gt540 for $799 - $100 Coupon for $699. Which means that for the same price as the I3 I got a much better laptop for the same price!
