i bought my m11xr2 with i7 4gb ram thinking it would play FFXI pretty good. since it plays every other newer hardcore game out there with excellence.
i mean dont get me wrong but it plays my crysis fine and starcraft 2 fine and borderlands fine, even when i oc to 1.6 FFXI runs crappier than my last laptop that i replaced it with this m11xr2 which was a 2.2 core 2 duo 2gb ram with a 256mb geforce 6 series. old lappy ran avg 20-30 fps this newer m11xr2 runs 5-11 fps in non congested areas. i thought my build of the m11xr2 with icore 7 u640 4gb ram 500gb hdd oc to 1.60 would be evened out with my old 2.2 duo core 2 that wouldnt even play borderlands with the lowest setting.
maybe FFXI needs more cpu power vs gpu. all i can find is people trying FF14 with m11xr2 and not with FF11 which those people say FF14 runs decent on m11xr2 which i highly doubt since FF11 has a lower system requirment than 14. if anyone does play FF11 on m11x with decent playable framerates above my 10fps i'm getting please tell me your settings or what u did to play it smoother.
o and my geforce is activated when FF11 is playing. i used all those tools and tried the factory nvidia driver and the modded 258.96 and i now am currently running 260.89

I am in the same boat as you. I play both on my m11x and it gets frustrating.
Its a driver issue and Nvidia is looking into it so we shall see the outcome. My only worry is that they are going to fix it for the 400 series and leave the 300 series behind. -
Some quick notes from a 6 year FFXI fan. the game is capped at 30fps, if you were getting that on average on your last laptop you were doing as good as the game allows.
the system requirements for FFXI as so low (in today standards) you "can" run the game on the integrated Intel chip and it may not swap over to the Nvidia card, but you'll have horrible framerates. You simply need to add the FFXI executable to the profiles settings.
Open Nvidia control panel -> manage 3D settings -> Program Settings (tab) -> add (FFXIV) -> change the dropdown box to "high performance NVIDIA card"
I have an m11x but never installed FFXI (stopped that about a year ago). BTW, the m11x does NOT play FFXIV on any "reasonable" settings. -
i added the POL exe and the FFXI exe and every game i have installed in the nvidia to the whitelist to use the geforce. i even changed the global settings even my internet browser to use the geforce. i use the optimus test viewer and all my games say the geforce is on when i play them. even with the newer 260,89 driver has the "show gpu activity in taskbar option" and that also shows it active when FF11 is running yet i get at best 13fps in my moghouse and roughly 3-6fps in jeuno or urghan. so i think FF11 is cpu intensive more than gpu.
i mean im running starcraft 2 and crysis just great but year year old FF11 pppfffff...
so to my understanding now is the i-core is overrated vs core 2 duo for laptops at least. i think they both are the same speed and they just say "turbo boost" to get you thinking its faster so you can buy and they can make a sale. -
If you have your cpu overclocked, you may want to try throttlestop. Check out theis thread on throttlestop which has made some large improvements to cpu speed because of some flaws with the turbo boost on these low voltage processors.

overall i love my m11xr2 for its compactness in mobile gaming yet im disappointed in it for not being able to play most my 10 year old games like FF11 and oblivion and two worlds and alice yet it can handle my new 2010 games just fine.
i will give that a shot "c2sc4"
i knew i shouldve bought the m15 i liked the m11's compact and its sim card reader -

I play FFXI on my new m11x and am suffering some slow keyboard response issues. I've just uninstalled the touchpad drivers hoping for a fix.
Otherwise, my laptop is handling the game well. It's a little choppy in front of Horst, but I know my keyboard shortcuts.
anyone play final fantasy xi (11) with m11x? not asking 14 either
