That looks like a 12.5mm HDD. You need a 2.5" HDD with a 9mm height to fit.

I have been looking into this also as I have over 700gb of music that will not fit on the 750gb drive that I have in there (I dj sometimes)

Next month I will be ordered a 1tb drive just to see what kind of case mods need to be done in order to get it to fit.

I have heard that the extra 3.5mm is on the "top" side of the drive, so removing part of the inside of the case should give me the extra space needed to make it fit right.

I will report back when I get it in.

Seems daft to make different thickeness HDD to me. I gave up and bought a 1TB portable if you can live with it, has worked well for giving friends files

I've had my eye on that 1TB 5.4k drive on newegg for a while now, but can't justify the loss of performance from the 500gb Momentus XT. Tiny cache and slow spin ruin it for me. Come on 1TB SSDs where are you!

Haha wow. 1TB SSD. Definitely not fitting in a laptop though. I think I'll go flirt with the accountant lady at work and see if she can hide an expense or two ;)

They say a 4TB will be produced in 2.5inch :) Its a 4TB ssd... only can imagine the price tag.

    Source here

Edit: says this was posted 2009... Can't be sure of its source but I've definitely seen bigger SSDs but not for laptops.

Yeah it should be fine, its not going to be a blazing fast drive, but then again, it will be faster than having a external USB drive.

It's not "daft" it's because 9.5mm drives can only contain two platters which limits the capacity of the hard drive. Only until recently (like a couple months) were 9.5mm 1TB drives available and Samsung is the only one.

I'd avoid the 1TB laptop HD altogether considering the speed is 5400.

That will gimp your laptop since that drive is only good as a secondary storage drive for 15-18" laptops.

    Consider a 750GB since they come in 7200 :)

Well, considering its tight density some 5400RPM drives come close to performance of smaller 7200RPM drives. The higher areal density makes up for the lack of rotational speed.

This is true, the new high density platters are pretty dang fast.

In a few months Im sure the 7200rpm drives will be out though.
