that one thread is long and doesn't really get straight to the point.

I bought need for speed the run, said i needed to update my drivers

went to dell.com, and saw they only had driver version 260 something and the game requires 290 something... i tried calling tech support and they told me to buy their gaming help service to go through with the install.. lol

has alienware stopped supporting m11x r1? and to be clear I have an r1 if i have the FN+F6 binary graphics correct?

I know this isn't an official install and has anyone had problems with it?

link to the last drivers in the thread:
    295.73-Optimus Beta.7z

When the "run" came out 290 series didn't exist.

You CAN run any nvidia driver you want if you switch to nvidia only in bios. You lose switching option if you do but some folks don't care.

Looks like you have R1... is there a VGA port?

nvidia has stopped supporting the manual switching gpu, so dell has also stopped making new drivers for it.

the r1 has pretty much reached its end point in updates. And pretty much anything that needs the newest drivers to play, probably wont play all that great on the r1 anyhow.

Alot of us here still love our r1s though, and use them daily. Mine has retired from gaming rig when I got my x51, now it is used for surfing the web, and running virtual dj.

That and nearly all the updates since 197 have been ZERO impact on performance on the R1.

There are a few games that just refuse to run without a specific driver version but since you can install ANY driver you want (without switchable) for that game there is at least some good news. The bad is that it may not play well anyway. No harm trying tho!

thanks for the info... sucks my 3 year old computer is apparently at its EOL because they don't want to support their own design

so if I switch to nvidia only in the bios, i'm assuming I can switch to intel graphics only to for the times i need battery life

I don't have problems playing pretty much any game when i can actually play it... for a small laptop its done well for the last 3 years

it does have a VGA btw for the one who asked

The driver update problem is nothing new really. Nvidia updates all the time and always has but the benefits to old systems is never guaranteed. Back in the day, some of the biggest improvements came from modified OLDER drivers anyway.

Once you go with nvidia only there is no intel!

Exception: home brew solutions to either run newer drivers with intel and retain switchable modes OR to run the modified drivers for optimus style (like R2/R3). Its a mixed bag of success this way though. I'm using optimus style with 285 series... ZERO improvements in the games I play but thats not why I use them.
