I'm looking to upgrade my M11x to a faster cpu. currently i have a Intel Core2 Duo SU7300 1.3GHz. I want to do the upgrade myself but am afraid to buy a chip with an incompatible socket type. I am looking to get an i7 processor but when I lookup the socket types the Intel Core2 Duo SU7300 1.3GHz has a BGA956 socket type (according to the specs I found on intel's web site) and the i7 has a BGA1288 socket. Can anyone help me in figuring this out? Thanks so much.

Well, sorry to say, but I think there are no other upgrades. The M11x R2(the i-core series) uses a completely different motherboard and has a different CPU socket. I mean, if there were an upgrade for the M11x R1's, I think Alienware would of offered them by now. On top of that, it's questionable if the Bios would support any other CPU's.

the upgrade would involve you selling your laptop and spending more $$$$ and buying a new one from dell since the chip and motherboard need to be replaced and the casing is different as well. It will not work and will be cheaper for you to buy a m11x r2 i7 and flip your old one. Try to trade with people who might be interested and see what you can get for it.

aren't the CPU's soldered onto the motherboard anyway?

    That's what BGA means...

If it was PGA, then you could upgrade to other C2D CPUs, but it's not the case.
