I was looking in to buying a portable laptop for school work and that so could also game too with out any problems. So when at first see the small m11x which fit nicely into my budget, I though it was the answer.
but here is the problem, iv been reading up and have found that there seems to be a lot of defects with these a lot of over heating. i want to get the i7 core, but should i be concerned with over heating and over all poor quality after all being in school i need this laptop to last a few year and can afford to replace it.

I'm pretty sure every laptop by every major company comes with a year warranty, including Dell and the M11X, so if something did happen to it, you would just send it in.

I have the first generation of M11X with the SU7300 C2D, and I can say that it has never overheated on me, and I have had ZERO issues with it. It's a great laptop for portability. One thing I will say about it though- Don't expect it to be a desktop replacement- It wasn't designed for that.

i've been reading this forum a lot and haven't found many problems with over heating. i played a round of crysis today and my cpu and gpu got up to the 77c range and i had no graphical errors it ran great
the build quality in my opinion is the weak point, some people have their hinges creak and many people report the screen not closing properly it contacts the keyboard near the back and leaves it slightly open near the front which can put pressure on some parts
with that said i am glad i got the m11x its performance is very impressive. if you are nervous about the build quality definitely shell out the extra $ for an extra year warranty. personally i am one of those "if it breaks it will do it in the first year" but other people understandably so do not desire to take that risk
i also got the i7 model and let me say one thing about it, anecdotally it looks like the r2s with the i5 are getting slightly better battery life. as a student that can matter if you aren't near an outlet in the library or class room. now with that said i am still happy i got the i7 because the cpu is one of the parts which can not be upgraded. -
I don't think the heating issues are as relevant as believed. I and many other R2 owners have been running it fully overclocked at 164 with turbo on for days now and not one issue. And once stretch was 72 hours straight while downloading all my games.
Does it get pretty hot to the touch when gaming hard? Yes, for sure. But hot enough to damage your hardware?
Not in my opinion. I've been running HWInfo and EVGA precision and feed it to my G13 gameboard and neither temp has broke 80 degrees. And according to others I asked in a thread, those temps are fine.
I honestly think that many, including myself. were still figuring things out when all the temp concerns were posted. I know that now many are running it fully overclocked with Turbo like I am with no issue. -
if you are gonna carry this thing around for college, make sure to add 3 yrs of complete care.

Thx for the reply's, so its true that the m11x can run at full overclock with out damaging its self? and are any other major problems that anyone has had with their m11x?
-
I've not had a single problem with mine.
-
had a r1 for 4 months with no probs.
r2 for 4 days and so far no probs -
If nothing else, this post implies you have NOT read anything. This has to be like the cooler laptop ever with a dedicated graphics.
The only "issue" R1 has is stuck fan which is solved by going into sleep mode.
What are all the (other) "major problems" ? The build quality is really really good. If someone got a damaged unit guess what - you should swap it for another one. -
Hysteria and misinformation is reaching a feverish pitch on this forum...

I didnt mean to start any hysteria, its simple that the m11x is a small laptop with a lot of power and as such i was worried about over heating. then see that there have been a few problems with this it really concerned me that's all. dont know if its a big problem just seen a few overheating and break downs

My hinge broke. Can't be repaired without swapping other parts from inside it. So right now either I'm waiting on four minimum refurbished parts or a replacement m11x - we'll see tomorrow when Alienware calls me.

my m11x is over heating especially when using external monitor being plugged in i have done some research and think this may be due to a recalled power adapter made by ibm my notebook can get so hot i literallly cant even touch it is there heat issues yes but performance is good i plan on sending my alienware m11x back to dell to get fixed i have noticed it only has heat issues while power is plugged in if only on battery its fine i have contacted dell and there is indeed problems with over heating due to recalled parts they are sending me box overnight to send to them to get fixed they said should be 3-4 days for the entire process so if you are having heat issues contact them about the recall immediately

Have had no over heating problems, and use mine on the go every day..

What is 'Overheating' to you?
To me, overheating is any extended temperature that will reduce the life of a component to less than advertised by the manufacturer. By Intel's specifications, 105C is the max temp that they approve the SU7300 to run at. 100C on the i7-2617M. When that temperature is reached, the CPU automatically scales performance to maintain an appropriate temperature. Overall, laptop components are designed to run hotter than desktop components. My i7-960 has a thermal junction of 95C, for example.
It is common fact, however, that the cooler a system runs, the longer it lasts for and the more reliable it is. So naturally, its better for the system to run cool. The rest of the components outside the GPU and CPU are usually designed to operate up to around 95C, especially with higher end hardware such as that found in alienware systems. I personally prefer my components to stay under 85C for extended periods.
So what is overheating to you? Its it just that its hot? That it burns your legs after hours of gaming? Its warm to the touch? Most people place 'overheating' into these categories and not categories that truly define overheating.
All I'm trying to say is that you should take what others say about overheating with a grain of salt. In my personal experience, the m11x runs cooler than any other netbook or laptop I've ever used. -
don't let your friend borrowed it and you should be fine......
