So I am thinking about purchasing an m11x R1. The first guy is selling it brand new with a 1 year warranty from Dell for $550. And this other seller is selling it used (excellent condition) for $400. Do you think it's worth it, and which should I buy?

It's 3 years old now, i would be extremely weary about where someone is getting a supposedly "new" R1 unit with the full 1 year warranty. And if it was brand new from the factory, it would still have the old design hinges, so you would still need to get that repaired at some point in time.

$400 is about the going rate for a used R1, up to you if you want to pay an extra $150 for a "new" unit, but like i said the likelihood of it actually being a brand new factory sealed unit is slim. More likely a refurb with new plastics.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. It seems a little fishy, and my gut is telling me to avoid it lol. I might just grab that $400 one if it seems reasonable.

Btw here are some images of the laptop: ImageShack Album - 5 images

What do you think based on the condition. Is it worth it for $400?

I wouldn't do it for an R1, I say R1 is kinda of to out dated at least get a R2 with I5. Around my area I can find an R2 for least 450-500 on craigslist

It looks to be in very good condition, shame it's only an R1. If the other unit is factory sealed I guess $550 is a reasonable price since there's not too much difference between the R1 and R2. I also think he could potentially be talked down to parting with it for $500.

Okay thanks for the replies. The guy who's selling the 'new' one says that I can pay through either cash or credit card, but I'll have to pay taxes with credit card. It's apparently an office where they have wholesale dell computers and such. Do you think it's safer to pay by credit card, or should I just pay by cash?

The truly safe move would be to hold on to your money and buy from somewhere else. If your instinct is telling you something's not right, you would be wise to follow it.

I really wouldn't get an r1. Graphics card would be so dated a modern i7 would probably have better integrated graphics.

I have a R1 that I wanted to sell for 500... then again mine had a 640 GB hard drive with 8 gigs of ram and I got a lot of offers. Im in so cal so maybe that why? Warrenty on a out of warrenty laptop is 250 (i easily got it to 200 by doing nothing ha, im sure even less if I tried) so it doesnt sound to bad. I think it all depends on the area that you live.

I would buy it but I'm in Ontario, Canada so shipping might be expensive lol.

I'm about to purchase one for $400 with an SU7300, 4gb ram. Here is the link: ALIENWARE M11X PORTABLE LAPTOP

I'm mostly going to be using it for work, since I have an m17x on the way which will mostly stay at home.
Is there any way I can test to see if the nvidia graphics card works? I believe the r1 doesn't have optimus

The R1 uses a proprietary Nvidia driver from Dell/Alienware.

No it is a graphics switching technology that is like optimus beta. It is manual switching, not automatic. Which I actually like more.....but as mentioned, the drivers are a little more trouble
