Just curious if everyone who has an m11x has the same LCD.
To find out go to device manager->Monitors->Generic PnP Monitor
Right click, click properties, click the details tab, and select the "Hardware Ids" property.
If the value is different from "MONITOR\SEC5441" please post your result here!
Thanks

Here's mine: MONITOR\AUO105C
It's OK, nothing to write home about. Backlight bleed is terrible as well as contrast. How's the Samsung (SEC5441)? -
MONITOR\AUO105C
quick question what exactly does it mean when people say that there screen bleeds? (sorry for the noob question) -
I knew it.
There are more than one LCD in production on this m11x.
As for this Samsung, it's horrible when it comes to Black levels and vertical viewing angles.
I tried to take a picture to illustrate, but sadly my camera can't accurately reproduce what i see.
Let me put it this way. On a black background, looking at the screen at exactly perpendicular, the screen looks like a medium grey in comparison to the bezel. If i move it an inch away from me it's starting to invert. If i move it an inch towards me the brightness of the grey increases dramatically.
When i watch some of the videos posted online, sometimes the screen looks incredible. Deep dark blacks, no bleeding, probably the one that Joker saw when he visited Alienware. Then there are other videos that depict a far worse screen. One with horrible light bleed all over the place, bad blacks, etc.
If you have the AUO screen and can get a picture that accurately resembles what you see with your eyes (at a straight on viewing angle), please post it. I will try my best to accurately reproduce my Samsung screen for comparison.
If the AU optronics screen is half as bad as this samsung, i feel bad for you.
If you have a screen that is different than the 2 posted so far, please post it.
Thanks -

@rayo:
Many many LED backlit LCD panels nowadays use bottom lit LED. It;s easy to tell, the more you tilt the screen towards you the more washed out it gets. The LED washes out the blacks and they appear to be a grey soup.
Bad LEDs are rampant, and you'd have to look at an m15x, m17x, or macbook pro or a high end sony to really see what you're missing.
I find it very disappointing and frankly aggravating that Dell has at least 2 and probably more different screens for the same notebook, and think no one will care or notice.
Imagine if you read a glowing review for a 46" Sony LCD TV. You purchase it online, perhaps because they aren't sold in stores. You receive it and realize it looks nothing like the videos or pictures that raved about it online. Then you realize because you live in North America they decided to put an entirely different and much inferior LCD panel in it because hey, North Americans don't care about quality. That's basically what's happening with Notebooks nowadays. -
Here are the specs of what i suspect are the 2 LCD panels sold under the model "m11x" that i am aware of so far:
Samsung (same as the Dell 11z):
Maximum: 193.4 cd/m²
Average: 172.5 cd/m²
Illumination: 78 %
Black: 1.56 cd/m²
Contrast: 124:1
AUO: (notebookcheck.com):
Maximum: 175.6 cd/m²
Average: 157.5 cd/m²
Illumination: 80 %
Black: 0.81 cd/m²
Contrast: 217:1
So basically, depending on where you live, or what panel you get, you may get one with almost twice as bad black levels, and contrast ratio, yet they are sold under the exact same model number. Again there are assumptions on my part which i intend to prove as i aquire more information. -
MONITOR\AUO105C
I am in Texas -
i have the sec 5441, and the real grievance i notice are the terrible vertical viewing angles especially for blacks
-
AUO105C
in california -
@abusedbunny:
What's your location? I',m in canada. -
Got the samsung. Although it isnt the best monitor I have used I think it is good enough for me. Regarding this though Black: 1.56 cd/m², Its better when its lower right?
-
@mobiousblack:
Yes, it's measuring how black the blacks are. Simple test is to look at the screen with a black wallpaper and compare it to the bezel. If it looks grey, the screen sucks, in my opinion.
Later i'll post aside by side screenshot of the Samsung m11x screen and a decent screen for comparison. -
AUO105C
We watched a movie in bed last night , in the dark, and the night scenes were pretty brutal. Lots of bleed. Vancouver -
We did the same thing 2 nights ago. Horrible.
It's funny i thought i'd have a problem with the size, but i don't, it's the quality.
I suspect there is a third screen that is of a much higher quality. If you look at the CNET Review for example, there appears to be no light whitewash, or bright blacks at all. I also suspect that if there is a third high quality screen, it never got past pre-production. -
I'm guessing the AUO - based on the better contrast?
And - for the record since it was requested - I have an AUO105C - Atlanta, GA
EDIT: Nevermind..you answered above..
-
auo for me in MN, I had an auo in my old xps 1210 and it was one of the best monitors I have had... This one seems about as good... the vertical angles are kinda bad, but with this size of a screen, I expected it...
-
@jsgiv:
The Samsung would be worse in this example.
While the samsung has slightly higher brightness, it has a much worse contrast ratio, and far worse black levels. Basically you want the black as close to 0 as you can, and the max brightness as high as you can.
Contrast ratio = max brightness / black level.
Here's an example of a good screen, from notebookcheck's review of the m15x:
Maximum: 247 cd/m²
Average: 220.9 cd/m²
Illumination: 81 %
Black: 0.38 cd/m²
Contrast: 650:1 -

im in Texas -
AUO105C for me too. Blacks are pretty much abysmal (read: grey).
Windows is great though, same with most games (as long as it doesnt get dark) -
Yeah, for playing games it's fantastic. Watching movies tho reminds me of a cheap portable dvd player I had years ago
-
Makes you wonder why they didn't have an option for a better screen.
Also, makes you wonder why they would use 2 or more panels with a significant difference in quality. -
My guess would be that on paper they are identical and one of their suppliers got creative with their numbers.
-
Both screens look pretty terrible it seems.
Oh well, I'm glad it has HDMI out. -
I just wanted to say that you guys gotta watch the brightness. Anything above 4 bars on the brightness adjuster will start to lose contrast and bleed really badly. I find 4 bars and under to be fine. It is kinda sad that this screen is lower quality though, bit of a bummer for a media centric laptop to have a lesser screen.
-
@Yoda Advice taken, cheers
-
Here's my take on the screen.
It's not a bad screen. You need to remember its small so I appreciate the fact that the screen is LIGHT and well secured, and it can take a beating. That aspect is very good.
Also, it IS high resolution and looks good in windows etc, non pitch black backgrounds. I've gotten comment saying wow that screen is really nice from various people, obviously I was just working on the machine at the time.
Blacks, are a tragic mess. You can't see anything in some games because of it. Fear dark scenes.
Overall I'm cool with it for now, but one thing is for sure, blacks are a disappointment but they aren't everything all the time. -
Yeah that's how i'm feeling too, such an awesome notebook otherwise. The m15x and m17x have the best screens you can get, i guess i assumed they wouldn't slouch on the 11 inch model.
I basically avoid blacks because they make me sad. Still though, maybe there aren't any high quality 11 inch panels out there since that screen size is geared towards cheap netbooks. Just a theory.
@yoda:
The change in brightness doesn't really affect this samsung panel.. same level of washout, just a dimmer version of it. -
oh gosh.. just played doom 3... is the AUO just as bad at depicting blacks? the samsung is REALLy bad in the dark. very annoying in killing floor i almost want to exchange it...
-
-
no i dont think the color levels would translate from monitor to monitor
-
@abused:
The screens are both pretty bad, but sadly the samsung is twice as bad as the auo, which sucks for us. -
SaosinEngaged Notebook Evangelist
Honestly, I don't find the screen to be all that bad. The brightness is fairly good and the image is sharp. I understand the colors are a bit washed out, but I guess I wasn't expecting the best LED LCD on an 11 inch screen to begin with.
It's better than the screen on the ul30vt which is all I wanted.
Is there any recommendations in the driver control panel to adjust contrast and whatnot to, perhaps, make the image better? Or is the stock settings most likely the best it'll get? -

I have the SEC5441. Ordered through Dell US EPP. Home of Record is in north east Ohio, but I'm in Iraq at the time. And it shipped to New Your where the military picked it up. To be honest, I have no complaints about the screen. Haven't had much time with it, but the picture is clear although I havn't messed with it too much in the dark When viewing with the monitor slightly tilted back so your lookign at it from the sweet spot, the blacks seem pretty decent to me. I really have no complaints. I'll do some gaming in the next week.. I came from an M17X R1 as well. Going for the R2 with RGB. That may change my opinion, but I'm also considering the fact that I only spent $850 on mine.
My advice, tilt the monitor back a little bit, and it should look better. Generally the same with most laptops I've used. Maybe your looking at it from too straight an angle. Just an idea. -
Yeah DR, playing games, and while in windows it's fine, bright and crisp, while still a bit washed out looking.
It only gives me the sad face when i watch a movie or in dark scenes in games.
I'm still debating whether to keep it or grab the sony z when it comes out. I spent the last 4 years on a notebook with a really good screen, and it's hard to get used to for me. -
So turning it down isn't a solution, IMO. lol -
i have an AUO. NY
-
so is the AUO all its cracked up to be or is it just as bad?
-
i find the AUO to be pretty nice. its certainly better than the lcd on the m15x(old version) and way better than the screen on my nc10. I even think it has better colors than my main monitor which is a 24 inch LG W2453V
-
Both my friend and myself have a M11x. He has a AUO display and I have a SEC display. We compared the two side by side.
With our highly calibrated measuring equipment (our eyes) our findings are they are about equal. Both exhibit the same poor top down viewing angle to the point where it looks to invert the colors (negative). Bottom / side viewing shows the same amount of color loss and greyness. -
@travis:
Any chance on a few side by side pics? That would be much appreciated. -
Ok, my friend made some comparison shots between the two.
http://picasaweb.google.com/Digitac/M11x
**Spoiler** Highlight the text below to show the answer as to which M11x is which.
Blue is the AUO panel, Red is the SEC panel
Blah, its not a pure white background... oh well. -
-
They do seem a lot closer then i thought they would based on the specs. I suppose i could be wrong about the SEC's specs. Still though the AUO does seem to have better black levels especially in pics 14-16.
-
My friend says he may have had the camera slightly towards the left. I would have to agree that on camera the shots seem to show the AUO with better blacks. But in person the differences aren't nearly as perceptible.
-
excellent +rep
so in terms of viewing angle, blacks, contrast and brightness there about the same? -
Ok, some more comparisons between our two displays.
1) The SEC is noticeably brighter than the AUO at full brightness
2) The SEC "warmer" (redder) than the AUO. The AUO seems to be cooler (bluer)
3) The black levels of both at similar brightness level are fairly equal.
My friend with the AUO display wishes he had my display now for the brightness. Similarly I wish I had his Samsung SSD... maybe I can arrange a swap.
Sorry there aren't more pictures, he leaves tonight to go back to California and was only visiting. -
Thanks alot travis, i think you put a lot of peoples minds at ease.
-
Why do all the reviews say the screen is real good then if its not. We will see how it is compared to my XPS M1210.
