i havent read anywhere that the screen is good. and its not bad its just the mirror finish and blacks and viewing angles... nm i guess its bad![]()

Well, yeah. If you never saw a dark/black on your m11x you'd be really happy with it i feel. It's reasonably bright and the colors look pretty good (after tweaking it in nVidia control panel).
I was playing Batman arcane asylum last night, and there's a lot of darks in that game, and it's just annoying how grey and washed out it looks.
The problem is that it's actually really hard to find a LED backlit screen with really good black levels- i had an asus and it was even worse, although brighter. The only laptops out there suitable for gaming with really good screens that i have found are macbook pros, alienware 15/17 (the 17" uses dual CCFL go figure), and the new sony Z, but they are all ~$2000 or more.
I had a really nice CCFL screen, and it wasn't the brightest screen, but the viewing angles were fantastic and the blacks were really, really good.
It's really too bad and frankly bizarre to me that Alienware didn't decide to go with a high end screen in this model (or even as an option) when the other models are uncompromising in their attention to quality and detail. -
I got the AUO 105C. Whoop-de-do.
In California BTW. -
SEC here (in Australia).
-
bump how about the R2 users?
-
Mine's an AUO and I've gotta say I'm pretty underwhelmed with the screen on a couple fronts.
- Glossiness is over the top.
- Viewing angles are horrid.
- Plastic screen that, when there's a significant amount of light being reflected on it shows itself to have slight distortions near the corners.
- Black levels are [edit: NOT] the worst I've seen, but calling them average might be a little too kind.
Here's how blue the AUO is:
This illustrates how predominant blue is out-of-the-box and what adjustments were needed in order calibrate my panel using a Eye One Display 2. Color balance is WAY better afterward obviously, but yeah, I'm not generally not happy about the LCD they chose by any means.
Anyone using the m11x for color critical work or any amount of photo editing needs to connect to external display. The black level issue alone is a deal breaker for that sort of work. -
hey man i do not have access to a meter can you post up your setting and did you adjust it in intel and nvidia or only nvidia.
thanks -
MONITOR\AUO105C in New Zealand.
Hmmm... this means we may have to be a bit more careful when picking an ICC monitor profile.
If someone calibrates the screen it may not be the best for another model.
Maybe should incorporate the AUO105C model number into the ICC profile name for clarity.
Other than the screen viewing angle I find the monitor OK.
To fix the viewing angle I invested in an external peripheral call 'right hand', it works well.
Anybody have a calibrated ICC profile for an M11xR1 AUO105C monitor?
Hang on... does one think the M11xR2 AUO105C would be OK on an M11xR1.. guess I'll check then...
OK. I just used m11xR2 calibrated LCD ICC profile for an M11xR2 AUO105C monitor on my M11xR1 AUO105C and my screen just went 'flat'.
It's lost all those vibrant colours that leap out at you and drill through your retinas.
To be honest, the screen now looks similar to my factory calibrated Dell IPS U2410 monitor, boring is that.
I have to get used to seeing shades of grey again.
In short, the ICC colour profile has transformed the M11xR1 AUO105C from mickey mouse colours back to sRGB standard colours.
From a professional point of view, is using someone elses calibrated ICC profile a good thing?
Like it'll be better than nothing, but won't I get the under and over compensation of monitor corrections for someone elses monitor.
For example if a monitor had a high luminance level when calibrated, then any other monitor using that ICC profile will be calibrated lower than it should be. ..... correct???

Maximum luminance for any panel decreases as it ages, hence the need for frequent re-calibration. This profile was created without setting a target luminance level.
It doesn't take very long working with displays that have been calibrated before you gain an acute sense of how horrible a lot of TV and monitors are out-of-the-box. And they aren't that way by accident. But that's another topic for another day. -
I get to stare at 2 diff LED Acer laptops (likely same LCD though) and a new Dell Studio at work and compared to my M11x I dont see much advantage other than size.
When COMPARED I dont find much to complain about on the screen. Use the built in calibration tools or 3rd party if you like to get it closer to what you want. I suspect though that a perfectly calibrated screen that passes spec scrutiny in a forum would fail the user test on at least some level if you survey the public. Why? Because some want brighter, some like the vibrance option. A co-worker sets her desktop LCD panel at 50% brightness and less for contrast. Everyone else likes it nearly maxed.
Factor in the cost for the M11x and I have to ask, "what more do you want?" At nearly 4x the cost/income to buy it in my area I'm glad they didn't pursue some of these smaller details.

Not a gamer but a coder and the gloss is killing me, so I'm intending replacing the original with a matte screen @ a cost of £75. UK dwellers caveat - I've seen the matte screen advertised at £173 !!! Shop around.

I just don't get that a monitor the size of 11 inches, cant take much power to use. Making a beautiful screen that size shouldn't be hard at all and still being able to use it effectively for gaming. HP has dreamcolor2 displays on there 8540w and 8740w that are s-ips 10 bit screen with over a billion colors to display. Even the sony had a screen on there z series for a time that was 1900x1080, and the new 14 inch envy has a 1600x900 radiance. I wonder if there is any mod that we can do to add something better on it. Either way I wont let that stop me from buying an m11x when I get the chance. -
SEC5441 Samsung

Samsung SEC5441 here in UK
Can someone take a picture and compare these two models -
You mean like this?
http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m11x/464852-m11x-screenid-5.html#post5995538
That's from earlier in the thread. It's a comparison of the AUO and SEC panels. Kind of difficult for most cameras to capture some of the differences you'd notice in person though.
EDIT: Balls... apparently the photos were taken down from his Picasa account. Sorry... -
thanks mate, for sure one of them was brighter (10-15%) in most of pics... this is so unfair, why AW ?!
-
Oh, the images ARE there. NoScript was blocking them for me this morning and I didn't catch that.
Yeah, another difference is that the AUO105C is cooler (bluish) while the SEC5441 is warmer. Generally people who have had both screen (due to a replacement) seem to be a lot happier with the SEC's overall image quality and viewing angles. By the specs the black levels on the AUO should be better than the SEC - at least according to the specs we're assuming are correct from sources out there. I'd much rather have lower max brightness than poor black levels. In any case, the panels that the M11x uses are adequate for casual use and gaming. For some/most people that's enough. For others it's a little disappointing. -
I have the Samsung. It's ok for me.
Does anybody have a calibrated profile for it? -
No profiles for the Samsung. Yet.
-
Can someone post ICC correction profiles for the SEC before I go through the whole process of replacing my system again?!
-
Ship me your M11x and I'll profile it for you. Really.
-
I have the AUO screren. i live in aus but the laptop is from UK.
Yes, the screen could be better but it could be worse. I find it fine, but the blacks can sometimes be washed out. I've only seen pictures but I already love the look of the sony zaio z screen but i suppose i can't afford one of those anytime soon. I got this laptop pretty cheap so i suppose some cutbacks had to be make. Good enough for gaming and web browsing (when there's bright colours). It's better than my desktop's screen colours, which shows how a cheap and nasty it is.
When i started reading this article i thought there was going to be a major difference with the screens but thankfully there isn't too much differences. PHEW! -
Since i had a lot of broken hinges, my screen was replaced few times. Now i'm on "MONITOR\SEC5441" and i can say its the worst one. Difference is not dramatic, but black is not so solid as it was on other panels.

Im in brazil my screen is monitor/auo105c
-
im in Chile and my monitor is SAM0764 ????
any info about it? -
That's the first anyone has posted that model number before. Did you obtain that from device manager using the steps in the first post?
-
haha, I just realized that my monitors are swapped between the syncmaster fx2490hd and the laptop monitor, its says the name incorrectly in the device manager, sorry
btw, auo105c here -
-
I'm waiting for Dell service to call and schedule the replacement for mine. Once that's done I'll provide a new profile for whatever it is.

-
Or was it dead pixels, I can't remember.
Yes. Scratches on the left side of the screen from screen to keyboard contact.
I asked slickie88 if his monitor had hinge failure too, but nope just badly scratched. -

any profiles for this screen?
I found it just fine =) -
My R3 has a CMO1111 any ideas what that is? Ordered on 13th July in UK arrived today....
-
-
I got the information as described in the original post
I also googled the ID and found nothing..... -
just did a little more digging, think it may be a Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp......
Google Translate -
AUO305C on my R3. Looks much more realistic after applying the ICC profile provided by the NBR review of the m11x.

-
Sorry dude, I'm the other side of the pond....would like to know how you calibrate though, if you wanna share?
-
Find someone with a decent colorimeter. Printers that do a lot of digital work and photographers who do their own editing would be the best places to track one down. Some home theater peeps in a given area will pool money together and get a really nice one and pass it around doing calibrations on their TVs once or twice a year.

Ugh, the default profile on this CMO1111 makes all blacks look grey. Its pretty bad. Even worse than the SEC5441.
Might be better if a color profile for it can be found. If someone gets theirs calibrated, can they post the ICC profile here?
Also I didn't see something that may play a part for the use of these monitor mentioned in the specs found so far. What is the ms delay on these?
