Ah, this one's rather simple: call Alienware.

Hey Gabriox dell fixed the hinge on my m11x, awesome job dell thanks!

How are they replacing the M11x hinges? I have an R1 and it's starting to make a dragging sound of rubbing plastic when I open and close it. Right now it's still pretty quiet. Do they have a different style they are attaching to them, or are they swapping the units out?

Is dell paying for shipping to go back to them for the hinges? How long does it take to send in, and get the laptop back?

Really? This is one of the reasons I bought a new laptop. My hinge is starting to make strange noises. I'm afraid to even close it anymore.

How long will they be replacing the hinges for free on m11x R1's?

Will they replace my hinges with the new design if mine isn't bad yet, since it will probably fail in the future?

I am posting in this thread because as of a few minutes ago, I am in major need of hinge/screen assistance from Dell.
Background: I bought an M11x R2 as soon as the R2s came out, I believe later summer 2010. Love it to death, except that a little over 1 year after I got it (right after my warranty ran out), the plastic hinges for the screen started badly cracking/coming apart (despite my taking excellent care of the laptop and careful transportation padding products/accessories). I've gritted my teeth for almost 2 years now, just accepting that these Alienware laptops were sold with a major manufacturing flaw that causes the laptop to slowly fall apart. I've extended the life of the screen hinges/casing through very careful use of plastic tape, super glue, etc., to add some durability to the cracking hinges.
However, I picked up my laptop today and one of the hinges just finally pushed completely through on the front, with the metal silver strip pushing entirely out of the plastic. I managed to push it back in, but I can't ignore this anymore- my laptop will soon be entirely broken/un-useable. Needless to say, the hinges have also been pushing out the back/splitting at the joint bottom part for a long time.
I need to get either my screen replaced entirely, or at least a new plastic casing/hinging around the screen (if that's cheaper...my screen is pretty scratched up as a result of the hinge issues, so a new screen wouldn't hurt). I am hoping to do this without it costing me an arm and a leg, since my laptop itself works fine. I live in Austin, so I am hoping there is a Dell service center I can manually visit without losing my laptop for an excessive amount of time (I am a full time first-year law student and need my laptop for many hours daily.)
Please help!

Any idea where I can email for an Australian customer please?
I tried emailing [email protected] which was the email given in the original releases about this problem, but a month has passed and I've had no reply.
I can't get seem to get anywhere on the dell website without purchasing an extended warranty. -
I've had it for a couple of years, but it's not my main computer and barely gets used for 15 minutes a week, so it's pretty rubbish that it's failed like this with such low usage.
The whole screen is starting to separate now as well, and dust is creeping in. There was a YouTube video where some guy takes his apart and superglues the broken screws back on.
Given that I can't seem to get any response or acknowledgement from Dell I'm thinking of trying this. Best case it might extend the life span of it a bit. Worse case I'll break it and I need to buy a new laptop - but it's going to break completely sooner or later anyway... -
Have you tried calling a Dell technical representative? It's what I normally do, and so far they've successfully arranged 2 LCD replacements for me.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the new company, have you tried contacting DELL directly?

Is that the phone number you called? If the 1st time got replaced before February 2011 then they are still the batch that was not working and need a 2nd replacement. -
