hi guys. my r1 came with 2x2 gb samsung ram 4gb total. i wanted to boost my ram to 8gb as i use alot of photoshop etc so i went to crucial, used the tool that found the compatible ram and ordered 1x4gb stick.....by now you realise i am not very experienced with this, because i assumed i had a 4gb in there, not 2x2 gb.

here is my problem. i pulled the original 2x2 out, inserted the 1x4gb into the lower ram slot (intending to buy another single 4gb monday)....and my machine started randomly restarting. so i left the 4gb in, and reformatted, only to find windows in early installation saying it couldnt copy files...... this went on for about 6 goes, i used my smartphone to go online and noticed a thread on here saying ram could be problem, so i took the single 4gb out, and re inserted the 2x2....and it worked fine. here is the ram crucial have sent me 4gb 204 pin sodimm 512mx64 ddr3 pc3-8500 cl7 does anybody have any idea why this isnt working, does it need to be in the top slot instead of bottom? do i need the bios for anything??? ive tried it with 2gb of my old ram giving me 6gb and it still crashes just restarts pc, no bluescreen, im really confussed. thanks for reading, sorry about length, but thought best to give as much info as possible. now my original 2x2 is back in....no problems... i appreciate your time in reading this, thank you. i have search through forum and didnt find a problem like this.

I like using MemTest86+ for initial memory testing.

Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

You can install this to a bootable CD or USB memory stick and then run this test without having to boot up into Windows. It runs a variety of tests and usually gives you an idea if there is a problem with the memory.

Your new memory might have been damaged in transit or it might not be 100% compatible with your computer. There should be zero errors when testing with MemTest86+.
