wondering if anyone has tested out the 540m ability to game at 1080p i tried crysis 2 last night and i was getting around 24 to 25 fps on low and the gpu overclocked to 800 mhz and 1600 for the shader 1080 for the memory. not too great but crysis is a demanding game.

I'd like to know as well. I use my M11x R1 on an external every so often, and I can play Portal 2 and MW2 very well, but I wonder about the R3.

I'm running it on a 23" Samsung LED 1080p monitor via HDMI (haven't actually gamed on the m11x's own screen yet). Different games have had different results, but here's what I've found thus far at full 1080p:

Dawn of War II: Runs well on medium/medium-high settings but starts to chug a tiny bit in huge battles. It's own Performance Test gives it an average of 31 fps. Starts to chug a tiny bit on huge battles.

Starcraft 2: Runs very well on high settings. I haven't tried multiplayer yet, but I redid the campaign mission with the Protoss' last stand with tons of off-screen action and it ran very smoothly with no noticeable slowdown. (haven't Fraps'ed this yet)

Crysis: Runs well on medium/medium low settings. Chugs a bit in the intro with the plane, but actual gameplay runs well (haven't Fraps'ed this yet).

Civilization 5: Runs very well on medium-high settings with 2xMSAA. Haven't gotten into a far late-game match (which consistently crashed on my old laptop, a i7-720QM, GTX 260M machine) but I finished a cultural victory fairly far into the game without problems.

The Witcher: Runs well on medium settings at 30+fps, only slight stuttering on cutscenes with lots of smoke.

The Witcher 2: Fps in the teens with a max of around 20 in 1080p. Resorted to playing at 1366x768 on the Samsung, resulting in 23-25 fps consistently (hardly ever goes lower) in the first battle. Surprisingly still VERY playable at those framerates. Haven't played it for more than 30 min thus far, though. Settings are Low with very large video memory and no texture compression. I'm about to reinstall the latest Nvidia drivers without 3D to see if it makes a difference. Also, Steam seems to be downloading a patch for it right now so that might also make a difference. I'll keep you posted.

whats odd is everyone says that anything bellow 30 fps is getting close to unplayable but i would say that crysis 2 is playable on low setting and i was getting around 24 to 25 fps on avg maybe even 26. i only noticed it getting slow around 21 to 20 fps. if i wasnt using fraps i may have not even noticed lol. has anyone tried COD modern 2, black ops or bulletstorm? thanks guys!

I would agree with that ~30 is my threshold and anything lower than 25 is verging on unplayable, but everyone has their own limits :D

HardwareHeaven did a Bulletstorm test at 1366x768 on an R3 test unit with a slightly faster CPU. They averaged 40 fps, so I'm assuming (based on nothing but pure conjecture) that you could probably get ~28-30 at 1080p. Again, this is pure, uninformed, baldfaced estimation.

I think MW2 would run awesomely on an R3 at 1080p, since I can run it on this m11x at high, no AA 1080p.

well oddly enough i have an m11xr2 and when i was playing crysis 2 beta on like all med or higher settings i was getting 30 or better frames..... but that was just using the screen not porting onto a higher resolution screen.

i tried out COD modern warfare 2. everything on normal and AA at 8x and i was getting around 45 to 50 avg fps. black ops usually gets around 5 to 10 fps more on the same setting compared so not to shabby for a 4 pound laptop im very impressed on what the 540m can dish out!

Does the r3 not have a Display port and just an HDMI port?

Anyways on my r2 I can only run off of my display port as it is connect directly to the nvidia gpu. If i try to play a game via hdmi frame rates drop by 30-50%

not sure if its just me... but if your performance sucks try switching ports

It drops because everything but DisplayPort goes through the IntelGPU too, if I'm not mistaken.

The R3 has both HDMI and DisplayPort.

AFAIK the slowdown in framerates comes from the fact that 1920x1080 is a much higher resolution than that native 1366x768 that the m11x has. I don't think outputting through DisplayPort would make any difference over HDMI in terms of framerates. However, correct me if i'm wrong in that.

The Witcher 2 played at the same framerates at 1366x768 output to my monitor or on the m11x's own screen.

whats odd is when i use my monitor at 720p the same res as my m11x when i switch back i notice 1 to 3 fps less on the monitor. i am also using hdmi. it may be because i am using a hdmi to dvi cable. or it may be that the hdmi does not work as well as the display port. can anyone tell me if they noticed a difference with the hdmi compared to the displayport?
