Almost pulled the trigger on an i7/8gb m11x r2, but realised i can get a 16" with hd5650 and i5 along with a netbook for 2/3 the price of the m11x.

But still i yearn for an all in one.

Before i make this crazy decision, is there anything on the 3 month horizon for competition I should be aware of? If it wasnt a costly purchase for me I would just buy the r2 now and replace it then and if.

I don't think there will be an R3 for atleast a year...anything more powerful than the ULV i7, would have serious effect on battery life. Interms of competition, the Sony Vaio Z has a bigger screen (still very portable) with better performance but it also costs another $400-500.

So the question becomes what are we going to see in an m11x r3?

If it had a new GPU, USB 3.0, eSATA and a matte screen option I'd upgrade in an instant.

What he said. Though it would have to be a reasonably significant GPU upgrade. Not like the i5, i7 kinda upgrade, which was more of just a little step forward than a true upgrade...

@All - probably the new nvidia 445 in our future. Just speculation though. Not as powerful as say the hd radeon 5730 series but close. I guess it depends on testing done at labs to see how much heat each of the mid range cards produce vs performance. Best Wishes, StevenX

Core [email protected], Turbo Boost up to 2.53GHz this would be a great deal :D

    Imagine the OC speed?

I would think a 360M would be a decent enough upgrade for most games. Then again, I'd really rather wait for something comparable that supports DX11. I don't really follow mobile cards enough to know what's on the horizon.

I think most people will agree the R3 better have 10/100/1000!

Adding something to the screen is a must; rgb, higher resolution, s-ips/h-ips,oled or something. That would be my first concern since the playability is decent enough. Of course there are many other things too that in others eyes would be a better candidate in changing. I hope alienware and dell will be able to push there m11x further then how great it has started out. I don't think though that since it was the only one of its kind really still is, that being able to steadily and rapidly enhance it even more to peoples expectations is not going to be plausible and unlikely. Also maybee the ability to upgrade to a quad core processor? and even better battery life? A smart battery or something would be cool.

    wow so many keen m11x'rs.

surely the other brands cant be far behind?

on a side note. what i would truely like to see is an i3 true ultra portable like the acer 1830t, offer a hd5125 level card. or even g310, or even an ion for that matter. why on earth so many 13" available and yet not a single 11.6". sometimes i just think they just dont get it. i digress.

The Asus 1015N is coming out in about a month (speculative) with the dual core atom and ION 2.

The 11.6 market is lean because you can go smaller for cheaper or bigger for cheaper. The m11x is for gamers and power users.

cost to build? the market is not an indicator of cost to build though? ie we get what we are given. consumer buying wise this is true. but im asking more why cant they deliver a culv with entry-mid gpu in ultraportable form factor.

the ion netbooks cost the same as a culv here, ie 1201n. why cant they put a g105m in a 11.6" su7300?

i want a bit of GPU like the 1201n with more CPU.

i would have paid for an m11x without consideration if it hadnt been so big and heavy, even if it only had a g310m. lower GPU power in favour of portability. more main stream than niche.

The laptop you want is the Asus UL30Vt. 13.3" display, Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 CPU, switchable graphics w/GeForce G210M GPU. Weighs about 3.5 lbs, and ridiculously good battery life.

The Alienware M11x is intended for a completely different set of needs than yours. Alienware is synonymous with "gaming", so they design machines that game well. Why would a gaming-focused company bother trying to make a mainstream thin-and-light laptop, where there are already dozens of competitors with their great products?

You will not, for a very long time.

Alienware *JUST* released the Alienware M11x R2 a few months ago. And that was only months after the Alienware M11x R1. I believe that they never wanted to even bother making an R1, but had to in order to get it out in time for CES back in the beginning of 2010.

Any update to the M11x would require a new generation of Intel CPU's, and a new generation of mobile GPU's. And considering that the M11x R2 is using the newest in both mobile CPU's and GPU's for its form factor, you won't see any new chips coming out any time soon.

If anything, my guess is that Alienware will find a way to make the M11x thinner and lighter, and package it as an Alienware M13x. Both Dell and Alienware have shown that it isn't afraid to change their formula and retire products if they feel that their new product is superior to their old one.

This thread is about as silly as the r2 threads that happened about when it was just the r1 - Just get one and be happy with it

Seriously. If you keep watching the horrizon you'll never be happy and never purchase anything because something better is ALWAYS around the corner.

The m11x is a faboulus machine *NOW*, and will remain the most powerful 11" notebook in the world for a while.

A friend told me that he called Dell and asked about a future upgrade.
According to him, they said "offtherecord" that there was a GPU upgrade in the near future.

    Really? I have doubts.
I honestly would not expect an M11x R3 until 2011 CES.
    That or around Thanksgiving/Christmas time.

    for the win. clearly. EXACTLY

if your going 11" go for a little less grunt and more portability.

13" form factor isnt a lot different portability wise to the current form factor imo. depth is about the same, width is more.

Well, the Acer 3820 Has the same battery life and size as M11x, it's only a 13'' display...

the weird thing is... how can Acer achieve that battery life with a 5650 and full I7?

Could it be that 335m is much more taxing on graphics?

It uses a Core I7 M (opposed to the M11x's I7 UM), which has almost exactly the same voltage requirement; i.e., the M and UM in use really don't use different amounts of power, so the energy use should be the same between the CPUs.

    3820t: Core I7 620M: 0.775–1.4 V
    M11xR2: Core I7 640UM: 0.725–1.4 V

It's also not necessarily a difference between the discrete GPUs that is causing the difference in battery life, as the Asus gets better battery life than the M11xR2 when both are kept on the integrated GPU.

if i could get the 3820tg in my country i wouldnt even be considering the m11x. but as i cant, i am.

Good points about the R1 and CES, I assume they just couldn't get the i5/i7 mobile chips then?

I too have stated that an M13x is due next.... to replace the M11x and the M15x both considering how the M15x is a poor seller (relatively speaking).

I doubt though we will see it until the next major refresh of the entire line, considering they are going away from the metal cases. The next AW designs I suspect are going to look a bit Apple-like in being slimmer with glossy plastic. Not saying I like it, but otherwise sane people go ga-ga over Apple's designs and they are leading the market now on the lappy front.

Guess the next stop is Sandy Bridge.

Judging by the M17x prototype spied recently,it looks like thety are still keeping some metal. Besides Apple has quite a bit of metal in their designs, and I can't see Alienware making an all-plastic laptop (No the M11x isn't all plastic.)

I wouldn't buy one until after CES in January.

There's a good chance that if they are going to release an upgrade or different configuration option, they'll announce it at CES in Jan. Otherwise they would've had it already in time for X-Mas.

If nothing is announced at CES then I agree, there won't be an R3 version until summer or this time next year.

Part of me wonders if they're holding off on announcing anything with an R3 until they fix or figure out the hinge issue?
