Hey guys. I'm looking into getting a laptop that will do everything I need it to and be portable, and still be able to play my games on it and have it last me a few years. I've seen that used R1s can be fairly cheap nowadays and was just wondering how the gaming performance is on them.

Would they be able to play the current games at a reasonable fps (max resolution, low-med maybe even high settings) such as Black Ops, Portal 2, BFBC2, Crysis 2, and hopefully games that are still coming out such as BF3, ME3 so that it will last, or would I be better off saving my money up to buy a new R3 or m14x and not keep trying to cut corners on cost?

On my R1 i play portal max settings at 60+ fps. Black ops is badly optimized and it lags a ton in single player, but plays fairly well in MP with frame rates from 20-31.
Battlefield and Crysis 2 are both are playable but not perfectly working on the r1. So i recommend in the long run to save up for a better machine that will last you longer.

    Hope this helped,
    Steve

As a r1 owner, I would recommend saving for a better system as well.

I purchased r1 not for gaming priority, but for portability. Games aren't that big of an issue for me because I have a gaming machine, but I wanted the portable machine to do various things including some video watching, simpler games, etc... which netbooks tend to lack in.

Unfortunately, the notebook that "does everything while portable" is somewhat oxymoron. What you get with portability will be less power, in general. The r3, even though it is the best small notebook out there, it still lacks in many ways compared to say, a general 15 inch notebook.

If portability is important to you, then save for R3, which will provide the best gaming experience for the size. If performance is more important, then go with 14x or 15x, but be aware, they're not very portable. If you're looking into 14 or 15 inch notebooks, Alienware isn't the only notebook out there. There is no hardcore gaming machine that is good in portability.

If portable gaming is a priority the worst purchase is probably the m11x series. The acer timeline 3820tg is a much better candidate because the cpu is really fast and paired with a mid range gpu with a low res, it will play nething on the market atm. I fear that the m11s r1's will be short lived in terms of gaming because the su7300 is starting to choke. Black Ops, BFBC2 and Crysis 2 are almost unplayable to my tastes (between 20-30fps average, i hate playing at those fps's). I also think that it will have trouble playing bf3

Thanks. I feel like the m14x will be the best laptop for me. Checking around I couldn't find any 14 in laptops with specs comparable to it. I know it won't be as portable as other 14in laptops may be, but it will still be more portable than a 15 or 17in one.
