Click "Change what closing the lid does" (look on the pane on the left) in Power Options in Control Panel.

Even, click start and type "change what closing the lid does" and you can access the setting from there.

(assumes your M11x is running Windows 7)

What power plan is selected? (on the right)
There should be, for instance; Balanced, Power Saver, High Performance.

    What about with Balanced/Power Saver?
(High Performance creates unnecessary heat with little to no performance benefit compared with Balanced anyway)

First, you have to be in nvidia gpu mode for a signal over hdmi.

You can easily check options in the control panel like namaiki said.

You installed another software for energy safe or like that (alienware commandcenter is ok, it works with windows 7)

Maybe check if you can change the lid setting in Alienware Command Center if it is installed.

I keep the lid open when I use hdmi out to help with cooling, does it in fact not make a difference in that regard?

Depends on where the laptop sucks in air. You can try check with HWMonitor if there is any significant difference.

the intake for the m11x is beneath the laptop on the left hand side (beneath w a s d keys). I wouldnt think that closing the lid would have any effect.

I keep the lid open because the screen is so glossy that when I pwn someone I can look at myself in the mirror like reflection, give the old six shooter action and say, " I am awesome!". Followed by a wink. It makes you a better gamer. Fact.

I have a similar problem. I can play through HDMI while the lid is shut, but the "maximize window" is lost, so I am unable to watch a full screen in HDMI.

Specifically, I was using Amazon Unbox when this happened. Do I need an external keyboard/mouse to remaximize the screen?

What do you mean by 'the "maximize window" is lost'? Could you post a screenshot?
