I got really into computer gaming about two years ago. I went out and bought an m11x on credit from dell. I have really enjoyed it but have beat the out of it. It has been my gaming system, my tv, my movie player, work laptop, and school laptop for the past two years. But I want to upgrade to a desktop PC really bad, now that I am done with school. I also have a Cr-48 that I use on the move.

The keyboard is messed up, space bar and enter dont work. the R key is broken. When I start it, it lets out an insanely loud and annoying repeated beeps until i give the er the mercy of pulling the plug. I have found out when I boot it if I press F2 to enter set up right at the last second it bypasses the beeps somehow. Also the battery is completely fried. The fan seems clogged and no matter how much air i blast at it i cant clean it.

I dont know the first thing about opening it and making repairs. I really am over my head with all the issues it has. I have the most intense feeling of wanting a fresh start, with a new machine. Can anyone help a broke college grad (US History......... mine as well have majored in waitering, because thats all imdoing) any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You could sell it for parts on ebay or purchase a warranty through Dell and get a tech out to repair it. Once it's repaired, R1's are selling for 500$ used in good condition. I assume a warranty would be 200-250$~ for the R1, so you'd pocket 250-300$ if it all works out. And yes, you can buy a warranty after your original has expired ;)

If you decide to go that route, try 5-6 different reps before making a decision since everyone will quote you different rates.

(don't quote me on the warranty price, it's a guesstimate)

well considering you don't clean it ever, plus lug around everywhere all the dust and small bits of food in the keyboard... yeah it gets that bad and worse...

it does just sound like it needs a good clean plus fix whatever the beeps are about. (dunno where to find m11x beep meanings)

There are a few guides floating around for doing self-repairs on it ... since you aren't under warranty I would advise you open it up and try to fix it yourself (after doing some research). As others have said it sounds like for the most part it just needs to be cleaned (that is just a matter of opening it, taking it apart a little and cleaning it out, and putting it back together like it was). Thats not too bad.

The beeps are more troublesome - cleaning it out might help (who knows), but if not that would be a good time to buy a new warranty and get dell to look at it.

What specs is it anyways? Is it an R1? R2? R3? More details will be needed to really know how much you will end up losing..

Likely an R1 as he bought it two years ago. Two years isn't too bad for a laptop, considering how it was treated I'd say he's pretty much broken even.

Agreed. My R1 is still pretty pristine, except for the touchpad and spacebar being a bit shiny from use, and I bought mine right when they came out. And I live in a house with multiple pets. Just take care of your stuff and it will last a long time, barring any unforseen hardware failures. The symptoms the OP has seem to be caused more by abuse and/or harsh conditions than anything else.
